Puppy vaginitis

I have had female puppies with this problem before, but my vet always told me that it's better not to treat as it has a tendency to recur, and that it eventually goes away on its own when the pup is spayed. Any thoughts here? It doesn't seem to bother her, but it bothers me!

If it is a yeast infection garlic may help. I would ask first as you don't want to overdo garlic. I think kefir also kills yeast.

I give the pup echinacea/goldenseal capsule daily for a week and it clears it up. You can buy a bottle at Wal-Mart for about $5. Just open the capsule and mix in food. A really big puppy may take more than one capsule a day.

Is it blisters and a rash or is it pus coming from the area? Canine herpes show up as a blistery rash on the lower abdomen and labia area. You don't do anything for that except spay and choose to not breed that dog.
If it is yellow discharge, then I would want some antibiotics down the puppy even if the vet disagreed. Sometimes you just have to vet shop.

It is a milky looking discharge, no blisters or rash. She doesn't seem to be licking excessively, and it doesn't appear she's in any discomfort. I don't like to use antibiotics any more than I have to. With my other female pups that had it, the vet told me not to worry about it, and it went away on its own. But it's been about ten years since I raised a pup, so I was wondering if the veterinary community had any new feelings about it since then.
