Precious Old Cats Gone

What a sad day here. We had to have our elderly cats, Harvey & Lucy, put to sleep today. They were born on our back porch 16 1/2 yrs. ago & have been wonderful companions. My son went with me to the vets--we both stayed with them till the end & it was a heartbreaker.

The vet said it wouldn't be painful but Lucy just screamed when they gave her the shot. He checked her & they had to take her back & give her more as she still hlad a heartbeat. Made it worse if possible. Poor Harvey seemed aware of what was going on & had to be pulled out of the carrier.

My son has buried them together out by our pond near our other old cat's grave. I can't seem to stop crying--they were so dear to us.

I'm so sorry you and your kitties had to go through that. Death is always so hard. My 18 year old cat died here at home last night. I hardly slept a wink for all my crying. It's so much more awful when you see them suffering. The last few minutes were so hard for me to watch, as I know it was for you.

I'm sorry, Wanda. But it's such an awesome thing that they got to have you for almost seventeen years! That lifespan, and with the same family? That's amazing and special.

Oh no, I am so sorry. It's hard enough to let them go, but what happened at the vet's office must have been difficult to bear. My heart goes out to you as I've been in your position...very recently.

I usually don't open topics like this. I don't know why I opened this one. It's too heartbreaking.

So sorry to hear this. We have been there too and am there now with an 18 yr old. We had an old cat that the vet found cancer in her mouth and it was my husband that had taken her to the vet. He said she put up a whopper of a fight and was not willing to be put to sleep. Went screaming and fighting. Since that time we try not to go to the vet alone when we know that the cat needs to be put to sleep.

Thank you all--it's comforting to know there are people who understand. We're all still crying so much. My husband came home devastated. Harvey was his special friend & "nursed" him through a heart attack 10 yrs ago. My son said it was only the second time he ever saw his dad cry. I've thought I saw one on them several times. Anyway, thanks to you all & for those facing this my thoughts & prayers for you also.

Just an FYI for anyone dealing with euthanasia of a cat in the future. Ask the vet to administer a sedative injection before doing the euthanasia. We do this with all cats (and dogs) euthanized at our clinic. Kitty may jump, or cry once when the sedative is given, but then they sit with their owners and gradually and quietly become very drowsy. There is no reason for owners or cats to suffer through a traumatic euthanasia.

Yes.

When my old dog was put down the vet gave him a sedative, and once he was asleep he gave hm the rest of the sedative and the dog passed from an OD. It was very peacefull.
