A wolf bit my dog.

Today before work I decided to take a quick trip around the property grouse hunting. As soon as we got out of the yard and started heading down a the trail, Molly rounded a corner and started barking and screaming. I thought she met the porcupine that is planning to den down there. Instead I round the corner and not 75 feet away from me she is trying to fend it off a timber wolf that is a good 6 inches taller then her. I shot my gun in the air to scare it and instead of being scared a second wolf jumps out of the pines and grabs her back. The other wolf stops and looks at me for one second and goes back to the attack. That is AFTER I fire the first shot, neither were fazed. Its like a scene from discovery channel when two hyenas are trying to fight a lion. She is spinning in circles snapping at both of them trying to hold them off and I shoot my last 3 rounds into the air as I am running towards them screaming my head off. They pause and walk into the woods but do not run off. Of course Molly has no clue how close to dieing she came. I usually do not carry a gun but I am glad I had one today. I need to get a side arm. She has one bite mark on her back and acted like nothing happened at all. This time I did call the dnr and they are forwarding the case to the federal wolf regulators. This is the second time in the last few months I have had wolves approaching me and my dogs. I could not shoot them because my dog was in the middle of it and with a shot gun I could have easily hit her. That is my adrenaline rush for the day.

Here is the bite. There is one deep puncture from a canine, the other is not too bad.

Too bad you couldn't shoot one or both of them. They need to be gone if they have no fear of humans or even a gun shot. They are dangerous.

Coyote got my min pin about a year ago. His wounds were a little deeper looking and around his neck area. The vet did not want us to cover them. Said it was better to let them drain out then cover. Keep the wound area clean & make sure rabbies shot is current. Took awhile for the wounds to heal but he is fine. Lucky little thing.
Me screaming bloody murder I'm sure is the only reason he got away. Darn Coyote came clear up next to my deck with the spot lights on in the yard & with me standing in the doorway with door open. They are just getting braver all the time.

Thank Goodness it was not any worse! I agree with Minelson that she was protecting you. I wouldn't leave my house with out a gun after that & probly would have to carry an extra pair of britches along too just in case!

Poor Molly! I hope it heals well and does not get infected. How scary for you!

A few years back our Molly and Angus killed a coyote just past our garage, a few feet from the house. It's scary when the coyotes and wolves loose their fear and act aggressively! Hope you keep a gun close by from now on!

Wow! What a scare! I don't think we have wolves here (yet). If she will let you (maybe even if she won't) clip the hair really short around those wounds so it doesn't lay in them. That will help prevent further infection. Also, hair lying in a drying scab will pull and cause the dog to want to scratch and nibble, making the wound larger, or the area around it very irritated. It wouldn't hurt to get antibiotics for her as well.

I'm glad she's okay.

Wolves need to learn to fear humans again. Otherwise they are too dangerous.

Poor Molly and poor you! That had to be scary! We have a couple of coyotes that roam around in the park behind us and they are becoming too casual to suit me. I'd faint if it was wolves!

When I read your post at first my first thought was why shoot into the air.?Now I understand. I'd get a weapon I didn't have to shoot into the air and get expert at it.You owe it to your dog.

We went to the vet and the wound got shaved and flushed. It was a little deeper then I thought. She also got antibiotics.

We tried the whole grouse hunting thing over again today and had a lot better outcome. Today we bagged two birds, no wolves around.

Ace was with but he was behind us. Thinking about it now, he knew the they were down there. Usually he would have been ahead of me as well. Even after I shot four times he still did not come any farther down the trail. Normally, when a gun is fired he gets very excited and charges right to the spot to find what was shot. Ace is a bit more "woods" smart then Molly and instinctively fears wolves. They are the only things he is scared of. I highly doubt Molly learned anything from this experience. I don't let them outside loose unless I am out there with them and at night I make sure they go into a fenced area.

I have yet to hear from the feds yet.

Glad to hear she's on antibiotics. Bites can become infected very quickly.

BTW...LOVE that photo of Molly with the grouse!

I'm glad you took her in. As Ravenlost said, those bite/punctures get infected very quickly and can cause a lot of trouble. She looks like a sweet girl. Good job on the hunt this morning.

WOW very scary!!! Glad she is OK. I hate to say it because I love all animals, but sounds like those wolves need to be shot, for the safety of you and your dogs.
