Quick...vet or not?

For the past couple hours Maggie has been gagging, choking and throwing up spit. I've looked in her mouth for a stick that might be wedged in there, but I can't see anything. She's making herself very upset. Breathing is okay, she just keeps smacking her lips, coughing, gagging and spitting up.

Vet closes in an hour. Should I start getting everyone organized and take her in?

If it were me and my dog, I would, emergency vets are a lot more expensive, better to be to careful then not careful enough, may be poison of some sort.

She's outside eating grass right now. Threw up the dog treat I'd given her earlier. I don't know of any place she could have gotten into any sort of poison. I'm waiting for hubby to call from work and getting ready to leave in the mean time.

Our Border collie Tigger twice got sticks lodged in the roof of her mouth. The first time we couldn't figure out what was wrong and the vet ended up getting the stick out. The second time we knew what to look for.

Good luck with Maggie. I hope you are are the way to the vet office.

I agree- vet time. Either something is stuck, or she ate something yucky, toad, plant?

We're back. She has kennel cough! Vet said it was going around and he blames the dry weather and allergens in the air. The only time she's been in contact with other dogs is when hubby took her to the vet for her tail injury several weeks back.

She got a big shot and two meds to take at home for the next two weeks.

Now I have to watch for signs of it in the other dogs! UGH...

Ugh! Good thing you did take her in though! Hope the others don't get it.

They were all vaccinated for it last November when the vet kept them while we went to the inlaws for Thanksgiving. Hopefully none of the others will get it. She's been sleeping since we got home.

Poor baby was so scared she peed all over the exam table and shook like a leaf. But she's a good girl...went in on leash like a pro, never snapped, etc. while being examined and getting the shot. And she was very well behaved in the truck.

My dogs have picked up kennel cough from our vet. Our vet was nice enough to cover the cost of treatment (for all 5 dogs). You should "suggest" this to your vet.

Kennel cough is scary but all of mine pulled thru fine.

Will do Becky!

Sarah, I can't do that since there's no way to pin it on the vet. It was weeks ago when she was there for her tail. It's not his fault.

Raven you might want to check with Golden Mom but I don't think that the Bordetella vaccine lasts much longer than 6 months, so if your dogs were vacced in November you may have a problem on your hands. I'd really hate for you to be dealing with numerous dogs with Kennel Cough. Maybe call your vet and see if he suggests revaccing? Glad your girl did well.

Ah, I didn't know that Honorine!

So far everyone seems to be fine, even Maggie. I think I caught it really early and the shot she got did the job. Of course, she's taking the prescribed meds anyway.

I am glad everything worked out. It must have been awful to see the poor thing coughing and gagging like that.

Yes, the bordatella vaccine only lasts for 6 months and is not effective against all strains...so even with it, they can get it, but it is generally mild and self limiting. Give her some benedryl and she will get through it.
