Dog Emergency

A friend of mine has a young dog with a severe nose bleed. Her husband took him to the vet and the vet said he couldn't see any obvious trauma so take him home and see if it stops...and if not come back tomorrow for exploratory surgery.

Well the poor dog is bleeding profusely from his nose. Her house looks like a murder scene. She tried cotton up his nose, but he shot it across the room like bloody bullets.

Anybody have any ideas what she can possibly do to stop the bleeding? This is insane and she's panicking because it wont' stop. The emergency vet is over an hour away and the roads are snow-covered and treacherous so going there tonight is not an option....

Honestly, I don't know if vitamin C is safe for dogs, but we used to give it to my son to stop nosebleeds. The only other thing I can think of is cayenne. If given by mouth (rather than on the bleeding area), it should be mixed with plenty of warm water. Still, I'm no vet and I haven't tried it out on animals.

Never dealt with a canine nose bleed before...maybe you can google and find something:

Boris got kicked in the face by a horse and got a nose bleed. Not a "murder scene" more like a constant trickle. It took about 24 hours for it to stop.
I would check the color of the dogs gums...pale or pink? I would be afraid the dog is loosing too much blood and a trip to the ER is in order. If it's coming out that fast and powerful. Also, is she keeping the dog quiet and calm?

I've already googled and she has already tried everything I found.

What does vit. C do for nose bleeds and how long does it take to help your son?

She is keeping him as quiet as she can...he has actually tried to nap but keeps waking himself up because of the blood puddle under his nose.

She can't get him to the E-R tonight...her husband is at work and can't leave, she doesn't drive herself, and the e-r vet is over an hour away. Besides that, the roads are treacherous tonight.....

He was about 2 yrs. old at the time and it'd take about 20 min. (I think) for it to stop. Used (again, I think) about 250mg. of C. That was 26 yrs. ago (!!!).

I think it helped clotting. ...and it may have been that the cause was allergy, 'cause the nosebleeds would start in the middle of the night for no apparent reason.

How old is this dog (the age might give a better clue as to a possible cause)?

I have no great ideas to stop a nose bleed at home. What time does the husband get home? The e-vet should be open all night. If it's bleeding as bad as you say, that's where the dog needs to be.

I'm not sure what time he gets home, but I think it's morning sometime.

He's a young dog...not quite a year I don't think. Whatever it is, is way up in his sinus but until the exploratory surgery tomorrow, there's no way to know what it is.

Yes, the bleeding finally stopped on its own. The vet really had no bright ideas, so hopefully it was an isolated event.

I would make sure that the air is very moist for the dog. Vit. C can also help strengthen the tissues in the nose and mouth. If you see the source of bleeding vasaline or something like it can be used to keep it from cracking and bleeding more.

All my advice is based on what works for people. Cauterizing is what they do in people when it won't stop but the dog would have to be asleep for that since it is painful.

I'm glad he's ok. My dog had a fungal infection last year and until the medicine kicked in she has a lot of nosebleeds. The vet prescribed epnephrine (I'm not spelling it right) and we would put a couple of drops in her nose and it stopped the bleeding. Yarrow also works, but stuffing anything up a dog's nose isn't easy.
