Unhappy worried sick

I work at Vet. Today I took Shep with me to see if we could remove a growth on his neck. He is 15 and has many lumps, bumps and growths but this was a little bigger and kept bleeding and oozing. I don't want to use anesthesia because of his age to remove it and suggested just sedative with local anesthesia. Dr. said ok we can see if he would be good for that. He was excellent and the growth turned out to be much deeper and larger than I expected. Well, now I wish I wouldn't have done it. He's is not waking up and I'm so worried and feel so bad. I called the Dr and he said because of his age it's going to take awhile and he will probably be zonked out all night. I still feel uncomfortable because he is just so zonked out. His eyes barely open and he's not moving and he peed on himself. I guess I just have to hang in there at wait but jeez I feel so guilty that I didn't just leave it alone and deal with blood and oozing. sigh. I would do anything for Shep he is my soulmate. My life revolves around him and his happiness and comfort. I feel like I failed him.

Minelson, don't be so hard on yourself. It sounds like you've always done your best for Shep and he is a lucky dog to have someone who loves him so much. I'll be thinking about you tonight and sending good thoughts your way.

Keep us posted! I hope old Shep will be fine when he wakes up. Just like with old PEOPLE - sedatives are hard to regulate to get the best effect.

He'll be OK. It is going to take longer for him to wake all the way up. Don't regret taking the growth off. It was not a bad thing to do. You were only trying to make his life a bit better.

Minelson - Oh my. I will be thinking of the two of you tonite. It sounds as though you acted out of love, and Shep would surely understand that. Go easy on yourself, okay? And please keep us posted. {{{{hugs}}}}

He's better! WHEW! He ate some food out of my hand and drank some water and was holding his head up. 10 min later he got up! His eyes look better too. He went outside and went potty. He's stumbling but doing good for a grandpa dog that had surgery today. I am soooo relieved. I was so afraid this was going to push him over the edge. Thanks everyone for the support, I really appreciate it so much.
Her is a pic of my Shepy

What a beautiful and healthy looking old dog! So glad Shep is now recovering well. You took good care of him, Minelson.

What do you feed him? His coat looks so nice.

Thank you!
He has been on home made food for 9 years.

He is still very wobbly and fragile this morning. When it warms up I'll take him out and walk him around a bit. He has been unsteady because of his age the last year or so...hopefully he will improve as the day goes on.

I'm so glad he's doing better. Don't worry too much about the vomiting this morning. His stomach is probably a bit yucky due to the stress and not eating supper, etc (YES, "yucky" *is* the technical medical term!).

Shep is getting back to his old self I'm happy to say. Part of the problem it turns out is he must have pulled a muscle trying to get up. He is perfectly fine except he is not putting weight on his front left. Since he an older dog he has enough problems getting up and down and around without having a pulled muscle on top of it! So that is why he seemed so extremely wobbly. Now that his head is clear he is doing much better. I'm so relieved
Thanks everyone for the much needed support!
