Paid my stupid tax today

Last night I went to check my ewes. One was stressed, pawing the ground, groaning, up and down. She was due last week, so I was happy to see this. I decided to stay though I did not have on very warm clothing. She's the one I've been worried about since she's new and I bred her to a larger ram. She's a BFL. The ram is CVM.

Fast forward several hours. Ewe is still pawing, up and down, groaning, panting. I decide to go in an check to see that all is okay. Reached in almost to my elbow and felt something small and hard and pointy. Water hasn't broken so I decide it's best to just wait and see. Fast forward an other couple of hours. Nothing. She's still up and down, but not groaning or pawing. No pushing either. Decided to call the vet.

Diagnosis - stupid, inexperienced sheperd-itis. She's not dialated. I could put my arm in so far because she was standing and the weight of the lambs was pulling her uterus way down.. I thought I was in past the cervix. I'm glad she's alright as well as the lambs..........$30 please. I'm really glad I have a cheap vet.

Wow, $30 is cheap! Mine charges $90 just to walk on the property and then the medical charges start.

So, she's not ready yet? Hmm, that's a long time for contractions but not unduly so. Did the vet give any estimation on how far along she is?

Oh...I don't know if THEY have a tax on stupid, but I surely paid it and I'm glad it wasn't worse that it was. I'm so happy I found this vet. He owns sheep. He doesn't have an office to keep up and only works from his truck. So, he's cheap. My last one was $75 for a farm visit.

No lambs yet.....she had to wait until it was bitter cold out, you know. Much too warm last night. It only got down to 22. Maybe tonight. Maybe tomorrow.

We have all been there. You just have to make sure you learn from the experience, then you chalk it up to and educational expense. It still costs the same but it doesn't feel as bad!

Great advice!

Hang in there Callie..there are good mistakes and bad mistakes...most are good because you learn from them.

And she still hasn't lambed.....stubborn sheep! Goes will with the shepherd. We're fine. It's just a bit embarrassing to have told the vet she's fully dialated and nothing's happening; he gets out of church and rushes over and......oops. It was a good laugh and he did show me more about the cervix.....obviously, I needed the learning. LOL!!

It's better than the alternative of a real problem! I had a ewe starting contractions yesterday morning... I was watching the monitor and debating whether I could drive into town for feed and coffee, and decided to go. Came back and there was no change. I went in for a quick finger-tip check and felt she wasn't fully dilated, so we decided for a "quick" trip to Walmart. Came home and she'd had them. I swear they love playing tricks on us humans.

I hope this one tricks me soon. I was supposed to have 3 weeks between the first two and the last four....now we're down to 2 weeks break from the worry.

And finally- we have triplets!!! When I bought this ewe, the owners said she had twins every year. They are HUGE compared to finn lambs. 2 rams, one ewe. Couldn't be happier. They are beautiful and well worth the wait. I checked her at 5, left at 5:30; got home at 9 and there they were- still wet and as lively as they can be. Now to get them to nurse!!!

Only, she's refusing to let them nurse. I bottled them through the night since it was so cold. Rats. I don't know what her issue is- triplets rather than twins? Hormones? They don't have sharp teeth. She could just be sore, so I'm going to try to get some medicine on her and if that doesn't help, take one away. They are so darn cute!

Not yet. I have to message them to my hubby and he has to email them back to me....LOL!! I'll get some today. He should be home soon and then we can do battle with the stubborn ewe that won't feed her babies. I'm afraid she didn't clean well. She's droopy so we'll probably have the vet out today. Of course.
