Trial by fire ;)

Ya know...I don't think I've ever posted on here and talked about my sheep much.

I have a trio of mouflons. Beautiful, spooky, elegant, spooky, easy care, spooky hair sheep. Did I mention they are spooky?

They live behind 8 foot fencing because quite frankly, they can fly.

I had hoped one or both of the girls were bred and yep...they are. My son went to throw the evening hay for me this past weekend and returned with the report that one of the girls was down. I hustled down to the barn just in time to watch her begin cleaning him off.
After everyone else went back up to the house, I remained in the barn to make sure he got a meal. Emma was NOT having any part of nursing so I gathered a reinforcement and we went into the stall. I caught her mid-flight (seriously) and once I had her in a bear hug she calmed right down and the baby began to nurse. My daughter's boyfriend was assisting the baby and positioned at the ewe's rear. Suddenly I hear...."Uh oh"

Yep. Prolapse. I've never had to deal with it before so it was interesting....I ended up rolling her on her back and sugaring the cantaloupe sized prolapse and getting everything back where it belonged. Lacking a harness, I followed directions online and made one out of balin' twine. It worked, she's been on PenG and the baby is doing great.
Me, on the otherhand.....took a while for the adrenaline to drop so I could go to sleep....

So here he is, the little guy whose birth caused so much trouble....

Now to sit back and wait on the other ewe, my dairy goats, rabbit does, my daughter....you get the picture.

Good work. Can't believe what the sugaring does. Who figured that one out?

This is an old-time farmer's treatment for prolapses. Sugar is a humectant and absorbs moisture. White sugar or brown sugar should work. Honey would be messier to work with. Disclaimer: I've never had to use this treatment.

Thanks, y'all
I feel that the sugar more helped me get traction and dry things out a bit than it did shrink the prolapse. I wasn't getting ANYWHERE replacing it until I sugared it up well.

I helped my vet friend and mentor treat a cow prolapse for one of his cows early on a winter morning last year. Unable to save the huge calf. The shrink after applying the sugar happened pretty quick and I was surprised. It did improve the traction and we did get it done. It was still a lot to handle for four hands and arms.

Doc had the flu, I had donated platelets the day before and neither was up to the job. Just had to get it done.

Glad we had some traction. There was much traffic at that intersection.

You did good.

Thanks for the humor on leaping sheep, got me smiling.

Glad to hear things FINISHED well, after treating the ewe. Very cute lamb and nice
to have a helpful boyfriend of DD to use when needed! Our DD had a mechanic boyfriend once, gave great advice to fix the semi truck. We miss him.

Thank you
Yep, DD's boyfriend is a country boy, helps with anything I ask. Just like with the prolapse, if he doesn't know he is happy to learn.

Yeah....remember the metal cage/ball the guy at the fair/circus rides the bike 'round and 'round in? Getting these guys riled up is sorta like that....things flying around the stall.
