Can someone give me the low down on silver foxes. Are they nice rabbits, how's there temperament, are they good mother's, are they a meat breed?

Their temperaments are FABULOUS. You want a teddy bear, get this breed. Every once in a while you run into a nervous SF, but most are teddy bears.

They ARE A commercial body type, meat breed. They do not compete with NZ or Cali's for meat, but the temperament is SOOO much better IMO. I have both. Tried NZW's, they were mean as spit. I now have NZ blacks and Silver Foxes - the NZ blacks are not mean but they are definetely more spazzy than my SF by FAR.

They were originally a fur breed (bred to look like silver foxes for the fur market) but everyone knows the fur market in the US is nonexistant. All rabbit fur is imported from China because for some reason they can produce prime furs for MUCH cheaper than we can here.

Generally, SF are superb mothers. They pull tons of fur and mine have litters that probably average 10 kits. I usually cull down to 8 for any breed, as I find those grow the best, but that's not necessary.

SO FAR, the worst experience with SF (or maybe it's purebred rabbit breeding in general, not experienced enough to know) is with the BREEDERS themselves. They seem to be snobby and always talk about other breeders in a bad way. My guess is this isn't just a problem with SF breeders though, but any purist breeder.

What she said. Silver Fox are great multi-purpose rabbits. Their fur is wonderful and the meat is great. We've been told that some years ago they did a blind meat taste test at an ARBA convention. Silver Fox won as the best tasting meat.

My understanding is that the "golden age" of rabbit fur was the 1920's. Several breeds were developed to mimic some other fur...including Silver Fox. But then someone realized that they could breed foxes and get real arctic fox fur not rabbit fur pretending to be arctic fox.

The one drawback to SF is that they are still a rare breed. There are pockets of breeders and big gaps with no one. Indiana has quite a few breeders.

Overall you won't be unhappy with Silver Fox. Good luck!!
