Heritage Breed Rabbits??

I'm looking for information on heritage breed rabbits, what type breeds would have been common in Ameria 1800-1880 for slaughter? I've been to the ALBC website, but it doesn't speak to dates on most of the breeds, and I'm not sure that some of the dated European breeds would have been so common in America during this period.

There is a book called "Domestic Rabbits & Their Histories: Breeds of the World" by Bob Whitman that has that kind of information. Check your library for it.

I believe the Belgian Hare craze started in USA about 1880 and had died down by 1920.

Dutch rabbits were popular in Europe in 1800s and were probably shipped to USA.

Harlequin rabbits were developed about 1880s.

Silver rabbits are probably the oldest, carried by ships around the world during the 1800s, see Enderby Island rabbits.

I hope that helps.

Have a good day!
