Question about just bought buck
Put a ad on CL for breeding bucks 6mos to yr old. Lady called. DD picked them up as the lady was way closer to her than me, and she was comeing out anyhow to pick up some chickens I had for her. Well, Ive tried to use him, but he wont work. I got to noticeing that he has a BIG ruff of fur under his chin. Hes pretty heavy also. Is that excess fur a sign of heaviness, age, or both? I paid $20 ea for him and 2 others, and only one has done any good.
Woman has a rabbitry big enough that she sells to PF. DD said that she was getting old, and her H wanted her out of them, tho she didnt seem like she liked the idea.

That big ruff of fur usually means it is a female with a nice, baby-snuggling dewlap. Like jul101ca asked, did you make sure it was a him?

put the buck that "works" in with the ones that don't and see what happens.
It does sound like your heavy buck with the big ruff of fur is an older doe.

Bucks can and will get a small dewlap with age and/or being overweight. And, being old/overweight will cause them to have zero sex drive.
Of course, being a doe will cause all of this as well.

I had a buck like that once. He was about a year old and he quit working too.

Heat can also have an effect and bucks will often be temporarily sterile from the heat, too. However, with such a large dewlap (e.g., "ruff of fur"), it sounds more like he is a she. Flip the rabbit over and if you can't find any testicles, then it's a doe.

Went out and looked. Yup, shes a doe. I can always use another doe, and I think shes about to drop, sos alls good.
I called my DD and told her to get on here and read my post. It took her quite a while. She said, Why dont u just tell me what it is. I said, O, this will be more fun. She finally found it and read the post. She said Is it a doe. i said yes, my dear, dumb, dang dawdleing blond, she is. When she was about to hang up. I said, Isnt this better than an A chewing (good naturally, & loveing) of course. She said, yes it is.

LOL! Well, it was nice of your daughter to pick up the rabbits for you. Has she any experience in sexing them?
Our old buck never developed a dewlap. We knew he was past his prime when he would mount a doe, then get a look on his face that seemed to say, "Did I leave the stove on?" And he'd just sort of rest there on top of the increasingly irritated doe.

I wounder if she decided to breed the buck 1 more time before she sold him. when your dd came and picked up she grabbed the doe instead of the buck. We had something similar happen to us We went to a ladys barn and bought 1 older doe and 2 younger does. She bred the older doe for us. We payed for them and left 3 weeks went by and i was bending over and cleaning under the cages i looked up and seen what looked like boy parts on Big Mamma so i grabbed her out of there flipped her over and yep 100 percent boy lol. Called the lady and she was glad i called as she was getting ready to sell the buck to a guy that was coming over. so the next day we went and got our doe and she got her buck back lucky she never tried used her lol. It was a good learning experience for us as she was our first sr doe and our first time buying rabbits.
