This was unexpected

avaerage size mini rex doe, bred her to a larger than he should be but still smaller than the doe polish/nd type buck. (don't know his background)

Thought the colours would make for some interesting small breed rabbits for the pet market.

This doe ALWAYS comes in on due date.
Today, one day late.

Four kits.
TWO were large with that squishy look of being too big to come out well so got squeezed long and narrow.
one was normal sized but dead.
one was active but VERY very noisy. Never seen such a noisy newborn.

I was right about the interesting colours, I just didn't expect over-sized kits from that pairing....

So this doe is raising her singleton and three from a first time mom. Hoping that all goes well. Doe worried me until about 7 p.m. then she started to look and act just fine, worried about her kits when I handled them (as per her normal routine). Kits are all looking fed.

How many in her usual litters? Could a smaller than average litter going a bit overdue possibly have resulted oversized kits?

Glad things seem to have settled down for her and that she has some foster kits to keep her only from being lonely.

normal litter is 4-6, so I didnt' expect much different.

I figured something wasn't right yesterday when she built a lovely nest but had no popples in it two hours later. (she's a build a nest, have babies immediately sort of doe). Thought maybe the weather was setting her back a bit....should have expected more but then I would have worried...and when does worry solve anything?

Stuck babies in freezer, doe is Kinnie up on my website, dad I never got a pic of as he was a drop off buck who I culled out before I went on Holidays. he was this STUNNING pointed grey buck...grey body with darker grey points, just gorgeous...but had this wonky eye that I said nope...can't pet that out, have no permanent cage space for him, so dog food he is.

all are looking good this morning, i'm quite pleased. Little talker is still a very noisy baby but I can't see a thing wrong with him, I think if it's a female I'll keep it and call her noisy or something along that line.

"Chatter-box", "Chatty Cathy", "Motor Mouth", "Grumbly"... lots of possibilities for a little fun with that one's name.

Glad they are doing well!
