Males or Females?

I need help from those knowing more than me. I got out my Carla Emery book, looked at her drawings, but we can not be sure of what rabbits are males and what are females. We even compared them to our known mama rabbit, but they all seem to have some (extension) when we press on THAT area, so we aren't sure what is male parts. I am trying to type this correctly to not offend anyone, so hope ya'll get my drift. We have 5 that either need to go in the freezer or be put with a male. Thanks in advance, firegirl

do they all look the same?
I couldn't possibly sex baby rabbits by description alone .. but one way I suggest people sex all small animals is by having 2 groups - put the ones that look the same in together .. and check in a week - they do change sometimes even for folks who are pretty experienced

not sure how big your litter is but in 1 litter of 11 NZW I sexed I was SURE I must be doing something wrong - I kept coming up with 10 males and 1 female ... sure enough - I was right ...

actually funny timing as the SCF (sex change fairy) just hit here today - I had a female jersy wooly (and was quite excited) I now have a nuetered male

its kind of hard to explain - and you can really only learn with expierence.

One thing that I can tell by is that the males is usually more round. The female kind of comes out onto more of a point. You can also see two small red veins in females.

Search the internet for pictures. They will help.

Here you go:

http://www.rudolphsrabbitranch.com/sexing.htm

If your browser will allow for it, enlarge the pictures and you will clearly see the difference. For the males, at the end of the part that sticks out, think "donut". For the females, think "taco".

This does get easier with experience. At first you will have some that are "maybe a male" or "probably a female". Try those again in a week or two, as Brody suggested. The answer will likely be clearer by then.

Yeah, both sexes protrude when you push on them. The difference is in the shape of the protrusion. Males are round, females are more of a line. We usually sex ours at about 7-8 weeks, and DH & I have to agree on the gender before we say male or female. We have a pretty decent track record, but we had the benefit of having a rabbit "veteran" show us the ropes.

I guess another option is if they are breeding age, throw them in with the buck. Bred = female; unhappy = male (or just mad doe?)...

Good luck!

Thanks for all of the replies. The video really helped. Also the reply about the two red veins. We will check on Tuesday. I woke up this morning with my back locked up, so I am taking it easy. Tomorrow afternoon is devoted to making salsa if my back is in agreement. We will take the video pictures out with us when we sex the rabbits. Maybe that will help. Blessings, firegirl

I can't take credit. I "stole" it from another member (can't remember who) because it seemed such an apt description.
