A day at Rabbit camp...

I got a chance to go to Bay City and have someone show me how she manages rabbits for meat. It was a great day! I saw her setup and helped clean out the cages. She is in the city so they are in the garage and this is a chore she does often. She raises Flemish giants. I got a chance to see a couple of litters of different ages, and we had 2 to send to camp. She did the "deed" for both, and then she cleaned the first and I cleaned/helped clean the second. I have never cleaned an animal before, so I think I helped, LOL I purchased the second to take home. I also got some great compost for my garden!

I had asked for suggestions for a gift, and had some ideas. But she emailed and said they needed perennials for a new gardenening project, so I loaded up my little car with splits and gave her a trunkful of plants! So it all worked out.

Now I am lookling for recipes! I am thinking we will BBQ the legs tonight, and then I will debone the rest for a casserole tomorrow, IF I can find a good recipe. I am thining of quitting smoking tomorrow, and with a coop to build and a new recipe to try, hopefully it will be incentive!

Anyone have any great rabbit pot pie recipes I can try? I thought there was a recipe sticky here, but I cant seem to find it (more likely I was mistaken!)

We are not far from Bacy City & go there every couple weeks if you every need anything too, but we don't raise flemish giants.
Anyways the recipe sticky is at the top part of the rabbit section, but I haven't looked there lately.
Good luck quitting smoking, you'll be so busy hopefully building those new hutches you won't want a cigarette.
The last rabbit I cooked I coated in flour with the spices I like & fried it with bacon peice wrapped around each peice just enough to brown it. Then I transfered to a baking pan & added some wine I had open in the fridge, put in rabbit peices, covered with foil & cooked at about 325 degree's till tender & about to fall off the bone. It was wonderful, dh & I both like it that way.

I used my favorite chicken pot pie (is more in my head) and used rabbit instead, and it is still my favorite! Since rabbit tastes a bit like chicken, I figured it would work with the same seasonings.

oops, there are the recipes!! LOL thanks!

I have never made a pot pie, closest I have gotten is shepherds pie, so the crust will be a whole new thing for me!! being such a large rabbit, I think I might be able to give a coupel recipes a go...

tonite is BBQ, the limbs are large, so should be enough for 2 adults and 2 kids. Especially since one of the kids isnt fond of BBQ..

I think I will debone the rest and try the "rabbit pouches" recipe here and use the rest for pulled rabbit sandwiches. The sanwiches I wont need alot for, I am the only one who really like them so it will be my treat
