I Hate Foxes!!!

Sorry had to vent. Fox got into my colony pen this am and killed my NZW buck. We put our LGD inside last night because the weather was SO horrible. Yes, it was the same buck we pulled through heat stroke last summer. He was also the "pet" of the buns. Super friendly. And, now I have no buck. Anyone have one they want to sell me?

Well that stinks. Worse, having got a free meal once, the fox will likely be back. How did you determine it was a fox?

contact your wyoming game conservation commission. they may be able to put you in touch with a nusiance trapper. guaranteed, the fox will be back until he is either shot, trapped, or you run out of rabbits.

once a predator homes in on an easy prey, they'll continue to return until something changes.

Well, I saw it running away from the rabbit pen. (I saw it in the horse pasture, not right by the pen, but it was fairly obvious). I am afraid to do a nuisance trapper bc I have lots of dogs and sometimes they run loose on the property (I run a dog kennel and people just let them off leash, not a lot I can do about it)

You might need to reinforce the pen or perhaps add a couple of electric scare wires.

I'll tell you what. As long as there is food it can get to it will keep coming back until the food is gone. You can get the rabbits back in cages or put an extra fence around the colony and electric fence. Dig that fence down into the ground and make it tight. Foxes can climb fences. I have seen it with my own eyes.

Or you could try to trap, shoot or poison the fox. Lock up the dogs and cats you don't want to hurt and then use something as bait. cat food, a dead rabbit or whatever.

I'll join your "I hate foxes club." I hate them, too. My mini goat kids, chickens ducks and rabbit all need to be in tight cages because of them. I've even seen them chase my barn cats.

foxes, good bad and ugly

dont know how that fox got to your buck BUT, lock 'em up tight, but leave a subtle but workable entry seemingly into your enclosure, and guard it with a snare, can be made of woven picture wire, with a well made loop. For fox, the snare loop should be 6" from the ground and in a circle 6' wide. He or she will be back, and will probe every inch of your place, and will enter any hole they can find. Make sure it is a false lead, but one he can find, even if you have to actually make a fake passage for them. Make the set, or may a number of them, and leave them ALONE until you get the fox. Any basic work on snaring will lay it out for you. Be aware the snare is indiscriminate, and if made right will kill whatever gets into it. The way we'd always catch foxes is to snare a hole or passageway thru a fence. They will always take the easiest way. Make sure your snare wire smells and looks like part of its surroundings fence, etc, smells like wire left in a barn, and is not bright and shiney.

I dont think I have to say more.

If you want more info, PM me.

DG

you could use a "relaxing-lock" snare. it will tighten only when the fox pulls on it. but will relax when he stops fighting the snare. i use a lot of them here in missouri when i do nusiance beaver work. it just holds the animal till you get there.

Yes a "Relax Lock" is the ticket

but a qwk and dirty fix is simply using some woven picture wire.

Any worthy snare shop will be able to guide you. If you have any problem locating them, get a copy of "The Predator Caller" a tabloid newspaper, or Hardings Magazine, "FISH, FUR & GAME". Meantime you can protect your stock with the nasty little dirty, picture wire snares. Six inches off the ground, Six inch wide round snare hole. My Athabascan Indian Trappers showed me that one, and I bought lots and lots of foxes from them ! !

It will work for you until you get the RELAX LOCKS. Meanwhile keep your cats and small dogs away from those set snares.

Best,

DG
