Hello all new to the forum and rabbits. I was wondering if anyone could assist me in how much to feed my rabbits. I have one New Zealand buck about 5 to 6 pounds, one doe 5 to 6 pounds. And two smaller New Zealands about 3 pounds each both females. I am usin Red bag rabbit feed at the moment. How much should I feed them? Could you measure in cups please. Thanks and I love the site nice people here.
I will tell you what my bag of pellets says: Bucks or resting doe's- 3 to 6 0z. pellets,
Doe's during gestation- 5 to 7 oz., Nursing doe's 1st 3 weeks- 1/2 to 3/4 pound of pellets, Nursing doe's 3 weeks to weaning 1 to 1.5 pounds of pellets and growing rabbits 2 to 4 oz. per rabbit.
Hope this helps, I don't actually follow the directions though. I have those J channel type feeders & I just make sure they always have pellets. So far I have not had an over weight rabbit or one that pig's out too much.
I didn't figure out all the weight for you in cups but the 4 oz. is a half a cup & if you don't have a kitchen scale or something like that let me know & I'll weigh out the rest for the pound weights for you.
Thanks man I just didnt want to overfeed them. I heard that it can hurt the fertility of them not sure though. thanks again. I dont have any scales so if its not to much trouble Ill take all the help I can get thanks .
I think it's being fat that can cause issues in fertility - different indivduals eat different amounts of food - start with free feeding the youngsters but keep a careful eye on them that they don't carry a lot of excess weight
if they do start limiting them some
I find overall...the best way to figure out how to feed a rabbit...run your hand over it's back every day. A bit thin...add some, a bit fat, reduce feed. In the winter my rabbits get extra feed just to help stay warm, some will eat it, others won't over eat if you paid them. it's always a balancing act.
