If you're just doing meat, why don't you check Craigslist? (Or freecycle if you have it?) You should be able to find some pretty cheap!

Ben, I don't want to discourage you, but I think most people - unless they are getting out of rabbits altogether and are having a closing out sale - would want more than $200 for six rabbits plus the cages and equipment needed for a set-up.

You might be able to get a trio all equipped for that amount... why not start there and add as you can afford it?

Yes, Ben, I think you're going to find that it's the cages and equipment that's going to cost you. I'd be surprised if you could find cages for less than $40 each, and then you'll need feeders and a watering system, and the nest boxes as well. Three cages with you might get for about $120. You could use dollar store crocks for feed and water. Nest boxes you could make your self from scrap lumber. Then your rabbits - as James said, expect anywhere in the $25 range unless you can find them at a yard sale or Craig's List, etc. So that pretty much shoots your $200.

Then if you're planning on intensive breeding (where you need to move the first batch of kits out so Momma can have some more) you'll need grow-out cages.

Then expand into your second trio.

I can be persuaded to part with rabbits. Cages, on the other hand - no matter how many I get I can never have enough and won't part with what I've got, for sure!

As Maggie said, your best bet is to advertise somewhere and find someone no longer producing rabbits for your cages, then find your rabbits.

By the way, welcome to the rabbit crazy corner of the world!

I was told by the Dr. out at Texas A&M that if you are doing meat you don't want to keep a lot of altex does as they consume a lot of feed. They said the best thing is to have a ALtex buck with some cal or NZ does. I am not looking for breeding rabbits I don't mind feeding them out for about a month or two until breeding age.

I got new cages for 13 bucks a piece-- made by an Amish man--I use the ziplock and gladware storage containers for now-- they are easy to melt holes in to wire them to the cages. i bought my AmChin herd-- a complete herd--8 adults and 18 juniors, for, um, 200 dollars, ( one of the does has a GC leg on her) and the fella just sent me a refund check because one doe does not have a pedigree!!!
Because 'what goes around, comes around' and I recieved this check the day AFTER I decided to donate a trio to 4H, I know I have to carry through on that!!!

But yeah-- look on freecycle for some starter meat bunnies--I got a nice sized Muttbuck for free a few months ago-- who knows how many NZWs may be out there for you...

well

If you were in Iowa, we would sell you the rabbits for $15 each. Just sold 14 yesterday and 3 today. Also have several cages with metal waterers, etc., and we have boxes that you can cut to make your own nest boxes. Not sure what hubby would want for the cages and nest boxes. Our cages are hanging cages and 5 to a row. Not new ones either, but very serviceable and we use them all the time.

I second the freecycle- I got my first 8 bunnies (6 does, 2 bucks) plus all their cages and feeders and waterers, AND two big kindling cages - one is big enough to call a hutch, LOL! The lady had two businesses going, and just couldn't keep up with the critters, so bunnies got the boot! Woo hoo! Keep looking - check bulletin boards at the feed store, craigslist, freecycle, etc. It'll happen for you!

You know, you might also check the prma web site and local harvest as well. Never know. Sometimes people are ready to give it up.

I made my cages out of pallets and chickenwire.

(I think you'll only be needing one buck)
