John Seymour's Homemade Feed

Dug out my book, "The Self-Sufficient life and how to live it." I always seem to be going back to this book for answers. So I was wondering, what do ya'll think about his recipes?

The title of, "Fattening mash for roosters or capons" sounded like a good broiler feed but in most of the organic feeds currently being sold they use peas for protein. So I am just curious as to what protein, fat, carbs etc...content is in this feed. Could I add another 110lb's of peas and make it a little more protein dense? Some corn for carbs probably wouldn't hurt either. I will also be adding a premix of vitamins and minerals.

330lb barley meal
110lb wheat meat (meat???)
55lb fish or meat meal
30lb dried milk; plus some ground seashells and salt

Another recipe is titled, "Laying mash." This one seams a little more complete from what I have read on Scratch and Peck. However, still no peas...

110lb wheat meal
110lb corn meal (preferably yellow corn)
110lb other gram meal (oats or barley or rye)
110lb fish meal
30lb dried milk
20lb ground seashells
5lb salt

Any more made at home broiler recipes that have peas in them?

I would suspect that "wheat meat" is a typo for "wheat meal". Otherwise, can't say as I know much about it.

I have noticed this book has quite a few typos. Still great info though!

Anyone have any information on whether this is an appropriate feed or not? I also got to thinking, could I just buy a bag of Scratch and Peck and take a day to sort it out, weigh each ingredient, and then I would have my approximate ratios?

The sawman mix
This is how I mix my feed now you have to understand I raise primarly game chickens. These are not eating or laying birds. But I feed them the same mix and have had no problems I keep a tad over 150 birds plus chicks I have a grist mill (hand crank) and feed the chicks the same mix after two weeks of starter mix
2 50 lb laying pellet (mash is a waste) more ends up on the ground and causes a clean up problem.
1 50 lb whole corn keeps the craw working
1 10lb of black oil sunflower seed keeps them as slick as a ribbon
1 50 lb of a three way scratch (milo, wheat, corn) I call this candy for the flock
1 25 lb of catfish pellet (talk about weight gain and well being this stuff is IT!)
1 50 lb of oats. Now here is the rub. I soak the oats in water and leave them till they sour or sprout. In the winter it is a good way to hydrate your flock. Frozen water bowls be damed this is a good way to do it…in the summer…well the birds just love this stinking stuff and will leave the rest of the mix till the oats are gone. i have most of my flock single penned and each bird gets two heaping tablespoon fulls of the oats.the mix i feed twice daily and each bird gets a vienna sausage can 3/4 full per bird
i also mix 50 lb of oyster shell and grit it is given liberalaly to each bird and put into cups to eat at will. if they cant digest it no food will do any good!
Hope this helps my black giants and dark Cornish do well on this feed as do my reds greys and asils

Hazel2006, I managed to finally get my spreadsheets to calculate protein for me. It's not complex enough to calculate vitamins/minerals/full nutrition values but I don't really need that because I'm adding a vitamin and mineral pre-mix. If you'd like, I could explain in detail how to set up your spreadsheet to calculate your own feed. Making your own Non-GMO feed is WAY LESS EXPENSIVE!! I will be paying less than $20/50lb making my own. If I can help in any way, message me.
