I've waited 10 years for these chicks.

I started planning my "homestead" in 2003. I really enjoyed researching the breeds that I wanted. I used the ALBC to find breeds that needed help surviving and fit with our environment in NE Minnesota.

Cut to the breed that I found that was perfect! Dual use, cold hardy- bred for freezing winters. So I started planning on finding and getting chanteclers. http://albc-usa.org/cpl/chantecler.html

So now it's ten years later and I have room to work with. The benefit of waiting 10 years is Facebook is funneling together producers with consumers nicely. I found a breeder that had 5 different lines of chantaclers from the US and Canada. I recieve my 25 (actually 28) today! I couldn't be happier. All 28 survived the trip from Vermont to Minnesota. I hope to do well with them.

Congratulations!!!

I didn't plan for anything close to 10 years, (more like 10 months) but I remember that feeling when my first egg ducks came-- that was my first step into "the lifestyle". I had spent so much time weighing on ducks vs. chickens, which type of ducks I wanted... Khaki campbells were my *perfect duck*....

And now I have zero khakis! LOL.

I am so happy for you. You found what you wanted. And they are from accredited lines. A win win win situation.

Ha, ha! If you think the feeling is great now, wait until you find that first egg! LOL! Congratulations on your first step into the poultry world.

PS. I've never had Chantecleres, but I've considered them often, especially the Buffs, but I'm sticking to my Leghorns for now (kind of opposite in the comb department!). Hope they do well for you.

Well my pilgrim geese are laying, so that's a start. I'm hoping the barred rocks "kick in" soon. But the chanteclers are my cherry on the banana split of a poultry set up .

Mine are white. I'm trying to stay close to the original breed. I wouldn't mind the partridge Albertans either some day.

We are interested in Chanteclers because we live in a cold climate (and my husband is Canadian). We also like the idea of helping an endangered breed keep going. Can you share where you found your chicks?

James is a really nice guy and knows his stuff. His original stock came from multiple sources in Canada and New York.
