New Homesteader.

Hi All!

Finally I have been able to buy a small homestead. Not easy to do here in North Carolina, where Land doesn't come cheep.

17 acres with a House, Cottage (500sqft), a pond and beautiful woods. We also have a small 24 x 24 barn that needs some work.

Overall the Property is in good condition. But the trees, vines, and acreage hasn't been maintained well for several years, we started on the clean-up of the yard and garden area first. Now we are going to be working on the Garden area, Chicken and Rabbit Runs. I am hoping to only have heritage animals and vegetables growing here.

We did get 3 very old Muscadine grape vines that range from 102 years old to 70 years old, the grapes are common here, the bases of our new vines are bigger than any I have seen. I have no Idea how to care for them but have found someone local who will mentor me.
We also have 2 Chestnut Trees, and a Black Walnut.
Our pond is full of Bass and Brim, but we haven't tried fishing yet.

We have been reading Backwoods Home, and have appreciated every issue. I'm so excited to start this homesteading life.

Welcome. Keep folks updated and as a newby here myself - I can share that the folks here have been helpful and very nice (even with some of my silly questions). Congratulations!

Welcome!

For the grapes, cut hem back, WAY BACK. Grapes only grow on 1 year old vines. Cut back everything but a couple of runners. YouTube has good videos on this.

Since you posted on the chicken board, I'll recommend putting a tractor together. Put the birds to work helping you clean up your garden area.
