Chickens and fencing...

Okay, so we have kept our second flock of chickens in the backyard for the last couple of months. The fence is a wood fence about 4 feet high. We moved them last night to the new addition Tommy built onto the existing hen house. The fence is chain link and is about 7-8 feet high....The leghorns won't stay in....why would they stay in a 4 ft fenced in area but not the new one? What do we do?

take scissors and clip the flight feathers off one wing on each hen that pretty well stops the sailing over fences. why they didn't go over the bosrd fence but do chain link I don't know maybe the grass is green on the other side if you can see it.

They couldn't see thru the wooden fence and they can the chain link fence.???? Who knows why they do anything... You can place wild life netting (I purchased mine at Lowes) over the top and that will stop them but will NOT stop any predator that may visit.

It's fun to watch them fly in circles too.....

Just kidding. The other pen was also home to them.

I have about 60 chickens in 2 adjoining areas. Most are spring chicks, the rest layers. Every night the youngs roost ontop of the 6' fence. They fly down into the fenced area every morning. They actualy know the outside of the pen is off limits because of our dogs.(the rest of our chicks are seperate) Real soon these guys need to be butchered, they are eating soooo much.
