Fox problem again

went to the barn at three this afternoon to check on everyone. Just as I walked thru the gate a huge fox ran out the barn door from the chicken pen..He must have heard me open the gate. Luckily I must have gotten there just in time as no damage was done and my girls were all fine. I've set a trap and guess I'll have to carry my gun.

Best of luck in that situation. Shotgun will work well in that situation. It's that time of year....coons, skunks, snakes, fox, etc.

Hope you don't have any other critters around the place! Poison is totally non-selective about what it kills... a little #1.5 foothold trap or two can be picked up fairly cheap and are extremely effective against fox. Look up dirthole sets and bait with chicken, it is really pushing boundaries as fox are outa season everywhere I know of but using chicken parts as bait next to a chicken pen i think would constitute as stopping livestock damage. Might wanna call your game warden tho, worse case you can likely get a depredation permit and be 100% legal. ;-)

Everything that eats poison bait around here is a predator.

I came out out the house yesterday to see a big black cat stalking my chicken tractor. It has a hot wire around it so I was not too worried, but I started running that way and calling the worthless mutt Daymond to "git him, git him Daymond!". Daymond, worthless old mutt that he is, started dancing around and looking up into the pecan trees for squirrels while the cat streaked for the brush line.

I daren't put poison out as I have to many other critters of my own around. My chickens free range and there is no way I could hot wire that big an area. I have caught fox in my trap before so heres hoping. As for the game warden he"s got to catch me first. Anything that threatens my livestock is fair game.
