Sneaky hens!

I know I have hens that hide eggs from me. Silly me didn't notice that hens were laying in a barrel I have on my milkroom table - it's a cat bed that the barn cats use in the wintertime. Though I stand less than a foot away several times per day, I didn't notice the accumulating numbers of eggs in the barrel. I finally noticed when a hen went broody there, because she growled at me from the barrel. The darned RIR hen that went broody is a hen from this spring that probably hasn't been laying for more than 3 weeks.

She's VICIOUS about those eggs, too! I took the eggs (I do NOT need chicks hatching outside in late November!) and she was sure to bite me a few times for my trouble.

I have 4 chicks in the bathroom that one of the game hens just hatched. Anyone need any chicks?

My chickens hide eggs from me all the time. For some reason they like to lay on the pile and "bawk" at me when I come to take them away. I've had my fair share of pecks also. Until finally I gave up and started scooping the hens up with an old hearth shovel.
