ducks prefer puddle?

We bought ducklings for the first time this year. There are only two of them and they are both Rouen hens. We raised them in a brooder for a little over a month and then let them out into our pond. They have a shelter and I keep feed out for them near the pond. Yesterday morning we got about an inch and a half of rain that made puddles in our driveway and now the ducks seem to prefer the puddle over the pond. The puddle isn't deep enough to swim in and will likely dry up by tomorrow, but they are drinking it and standing and preening in the middle of it. Is it likely that there is something wrong with our pond water that is causing them to prefer a mud puddle or is this just normal duck behavior?

When we get heavy rain my ducks swim all over the lawn. Any new puddle they'll be swimming in. Seems they like the new fresh rain water.

Could be that the ducks feel more secure closer to the house. I would never encourage poultry to spend their time away from the buildings. Way more bad things can happen to them away from the house.

HA.. ducks like anything other than what they have. Mine prefer to stand in the middle of the road then stay in their yard where they have shade, pool, food, sprinkler, bugs...etc... They make me crazy.

My ducks LOVE messy puddles - normal duck behavior.

Rain and puddles bring worms and bugs (duckie treats) to the surface. They will also start drilling holes anywhere there is soft ground.

Thanks everyone, I guess we won't worry about our pond water. It's a moot point anyway, the puddle is already dried up.
