Heat lamps; must I?
I'm thinking of ordering a few chicks. Tired of my empty coop, I'm sure many of you understand the happiness a few fat, pretty hens can inspire just scratching around. Chickens = balm for my soul.
It was 97 today with a heat index of 107. Um. Heat lamp seems like a bad idea, like it would just fry the little peeps! Anybody else brood motherless chicks sans heat lamp?
I'm thinking of keeping them on my porch during the heat of the day (assuming they are doing well) and bringing them in at night. Obviously they'd be supplied with artificial heat then.
Thoughts?
Oh... and if you were gonna replace a second bathtub anyway... would you consider.... *blush* laying down newspaper, sprinkling shavings over, and using it as a melt-proof/fire resistant brooder? Just thinking how nice it would be to lift that out, pitch it, remove the chicks for a quick scrub, and back in they go. No one uses it, and it's cat and toddler proof, so....
