what is the world happened to my egg?

When I went to gather my eggs, I noticed a strange egg.

It was soft, like a water balloon and it seemed to have a string coming from the end like an umbilical cord.

What Happened?

Shell wasn't fully formed. It happens sometimes.

could be caused by low calcium available, or perhaps the egg just went thru the tubes too fast. If you see it happen a LOT, you need to up the calcium the girls have available. Otherwise...it's just one of those things.

It happens sometimes..try giving them milk or oyster shell or as a last resort crush up eggshells and bake them then give it to them. I don't know what the string was, I haven't ever seen that but it may just be part of the egg. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it happens all the time.

Check the health of your eggs over all not just one hens. I had a single RIR hen that laid these things everyday. All the rest of the hens laid normal healthy eggs. Don't switch up your routine for one hen. Just my experience.

Oh the hen went to freezer camp after laying these things for over a month.

The "string" was probably part of the membrane laid over the shell, sounds like it just came through too quickly...If it persists, find the culprit and invite it to Sunday dinner.

I get a few of those from new layers, but once they get things figured out the soft eggs stop
