Thumbs up Fresh Eggs!!!!!!

Well, my little White Leghorns have started to lay eggs, some at least. Though not very big yet, I had to eat 6 the other morning for breakfast. But, after almost two years eating store bought eggs they were fantastic. Few more weeks and we will again have enough to share with neighbors and family.

I have 6 hens and this week one of them started laying eggs! Tiny little things, but that's OK! We got 4 eggs in 5 days. I'm sure that production will increase once we process 4 of the 5 roo's we have.

Now I have to figure out how to make sure they have enough light.

Light

In a couple weeks we will set up the timer for the henhouse light. This will turn on a 40 watt bulb over the feeder at around 4am and then off again sometime after the sun comes up. We have always had good luck with this. It does not need to be a bright light and it should not be too close to the nest boxes, they seem prefer to be in the shadows for egg laying.

They are tiny little eggs though huh? Actually, the first one I found was not much bigger that a robin egg. From all the years of raising laying hens I don't think I have ever found one as small. They are tasty though and we know they will get bigger soon.

There's nothing quite like fresh eggs! We've only had chickens since May 2008, and I hope I never have to go back to store bought eggs.

Some of our friends say they are now "egg snobs", refusing to eat anything but our fresh eggs.
