Got my new babies today

I forgot how cute new chicks are!!!

We got 10 pullets each and 1 cockerel each of Barred Rocks and Buff Orpingtons, plus 10 straight run Splash Cochin standards.

Oh my goodness! The little Cochin's feet are fuzzy already! They are all doing so much better than our Golden Comets did this spring when we first got them. I think it must be that it is nice and warm still. With any luck, we'll be getting eggs from them around the first of the year, according to my calendar.

My only question is when should we introduce the flocks? Right now, they're in the chicken house in a playpen. My "teens" can't get to the babies, nor can they poop on them, but they can see and hear them. However, the playpen won't be big enough for long, maybe a month.

TIA!!!

Congrats! Put something that the littles can hide under, but is too low for the bigger ones. A sheet of plywood on bricks works. It is even better if you screw the plywood to some 2x4s on edge to make a shallow box. Put it upside down on the bricks and put feed/water under it. Little birds are at greatest risk of attack when they are feeding. They will get down and crawl under the plywood.
