Geese and Ducks?

Can geese safely be housed with ducks?

I have 5 female Buff ducks, and I would love to have a pair of Sebastapol geese one day. Could they live with the ducks, or would they need separate housing?

Thanks

As long as they have plenty of space they can co-exist happily. A setting goose can be hard on a duck that wants to share her nest and ganders don't appreciate aggressive drakes. Otherwise they should get along fine.

it might take awhile-
at first my african goose pair bullied my ancona ducks
but after a few months
they seem to be sorting it out better
but geese are still bullies.

Ducks & Geese

They will do fine as long as there is plenty of room. I have a pair of Sebastapols and a pair of Buff ducks. The Sebastapols are 13 and 14years old. The Buffs are 11 years old. The Buffs are a little feeble now and during breeding season I do make sure the geese are away from the ducks just to protect them. When they were younger never had any problems. With good care they can live a long time. (oldest ducks I have ever raised though!)

On our farm, its the reverse. Our Indian Runner drakes make great sport of taking on our flock of (now) five Chinese geese which must be three times their size. No one has ever been wounded, and in the end, the geese usually stand their ground - but the geese are rarely the aggessors - it's our drakes who get cocky. They have really developed guerilla tactics. It's usually - Attack - RETREAT, Attack - RETREAT. The noise gets tiresome. After three years and they still won't give up.

I just had a goose kill a muscovy duckling yesterday. I didn't see it but it was probably one of the goslings born on May 21st. I was told the goose was swinging the poor duckling and throwing it on the ground. It must have been in the water pan too because it was soaked.

They have the whole yard to stay a part but I think the poor duckling made a wrong move and got trapped.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. It's interesting to learn about different people's experiences.

Fishhead, I'm sorry you lost your duckling

I've had geese kill an aggressive drake, but they have always been good with ducklings.
