If a Gilt looses its litter?

If a guilt looses its litter at birth, how long will it take before she will bred again?

Piglet loss and re-breeding

The big question is of course, how old was the litter that the sow lost? If it was new within a couple weeks, she should go back in heat in a month give or take a few days either way. Her breeding cycle shouldn't change one way or another by more than a few days.

Pigs are very protective of their litters and the Sow is or rather can be very vicious and extremely territorial. That being said, she can also mourn her loss for several days after losing a litter that is a few to several days old. However, if there are other Gilts going in to heat, she will respond rapidly as well.

My family raised pigs for a full generation and a bit until the bottom fell out of the price market back in the 70s. Sometimes when we had a sow lose her litter and we did not have others on or near their cycles, we would take the Sow to another farm for a few days to a couple weeks until she synced and then we would bring her back to our farm and expose her to our Herd Sire.

I hope this helps and answers your questions. If not please don't hesitate to let me know and I will dig around in our old records and see if I can come up with the answers for you.

Here is the details of what happened. I had a gilt that didn't nest or show stong signs of being ready to deliver. She broke out of her holding area, and gave birth with the rest of the gilts and boar back on Feb 20th. It happened durring a very cold night, and all the pigglets died. I am trying to figure out what would be the earliest she might deliver again, if she has been with the boar the hole time?

Really hard to say because you don't know if or when she may have been bred again. She could have little ones as early as June 23th gave or take a few days.

Best,
Gerold.

I read every day but don't know diddly, so don't respond. I'll bet there are others doing the same.

Its true, nearly everyone reads about things that they are wanting to know more about. There are also a lot of people that have information that could help someone else out, and they choose not to respond. Its always good to get plenty of opinions, then it helps to make wiser decisions.

If you would have put all the info in the question you will get more response. Has she been in with the boar the whole time since she lost the litter?

As a general rule we find that the sows dry up after three days and reheat at seven days. If not rebred then it's a 21 day cycle after that. All numbers subject to individual variance. Your Mileage Will Vary.

If a gilt has had a litter then she's a sow, even if she lost it. She would be Parity 1 (P1) sow.

If she lost the litter due to extenuating circumstances then I would not hold it against her. If she had disease that caused lost litter then she'll probably be okay the second time around. Otherwise I would question rebreeding her if I had other choices available and instead would put her to meat.

many pig factory dont even left the piglets with the mom there taken and put in a pen with pan milk moms are left for about a week and then getting rebreed by 2 weeks idk if they give them the shot to make them cycle or if they just come back in heat that fast with no piglets on them im not sure just was talking to a guy that use to work for a pig factory and thats what he told me

so if she was in with a boar she could of got rebreed within a week of having the piglets its hard to say but keep track of when she was in there and see if she comes back in to heat anytime if not then she got breed again
