Hog vaccines.

Hog vaccines.

Hog vaccines?

Yes, Hog vaccines!

So, what do you folks think about vaccines for hogs?

I have 4 sows that were weaned the end of September, and a boar who was weaned the end of October. They live together in the same pen. I hope that next spring I can turn them out into the a couple acres of forest, and by next winter, maybe see some more piglets running around.

But in the mean time, should I be thinking about shots?

You need to contact a local vet to find out what, if anything is endemic in your area. While you're discussing that you can also talk to the vet about your herd management and lifestyle which will help make the final decisions on what you should be giving.

I second contacting your local vet for advice. They will know what is recommended for your area. Once you know that, you can decide if it's something that makes sense for you.

Also a good idea to ask the people you bought your pigs from if they vaccinate, and what for, if they would recommend it for you.

It sure wont hurt to vaccinate them all for repro diseases. A couple bucks now can save you hundreds, plus MUCHO aggravation and exasperation later. I keep mine up to date, and I have had nothing but large, healthy litters. Can't say I wouldn't have had the same outcome otherwise, but why take the chance? A bottle of Farrowsure can be kind of pricey, it might work to find another producer that is willing to sell you the doses you need, or split the costs, etc.
Since you live in or near a rabies epidemic area, I would absolutely not turn them out unless I vaccinated them for rabies as well.
My 2 cents.

We have seen a swine reproductive pathogen rampant in this area, and on my farm. So I did get the Farrowsure.

I have not heard of any rabies in this area. Asking around, it has been over 10 years since that has been active in this region.

My land is dense forest. Unlike open pasture [where sun light bakes the ground and kills many pathogens] the forest canopy blocks much of the direct sunlight. So forest floors tend to harbor a lot more diseases. We have seen this over and over with goats and sheep.

Pseudorabies
rhinitis

Vaccinating against these two diseases will save you money in the long run. There are other vaccines available, but these are the most important to vaccinate against in our area, or at least they were back when my husband was doing hogs. Hopefully pseudorabies is close to being erradicated now.

The USDA declared that my state was completely free of Pseudorabies in 1992. They say there has not been any reported cases since then. I think I read a USDA report that said we were the first state to completely eradicate it.
