Question Raising A Hog For Someone Else

Has anyone ever done this? What would be a fair way to be compensated for doing this? Somebody asked if I would consider raising one of the pigs I have for them. I havent given an answer because I dont know what would be the best route for this. ~Terry

I had cousins and friends coming out of the woodwork to get pigs - I had them pay me for the feeder pig plus $75 and I billed them for the feed every month/#of pigs. This is the fourth year and it seems to work great for us. They get a reasonably priced hog (not as cheap as sale barn) and I make a little money (they're family after all...). The last several years it's come to about $250/pig. This year it's going to be more since the price of feed is through the roof - but they know that going into it. First cold weekend in November we all get together and kill them. Next day we cut them up and make the sausages, bacon, etc. I usually do 10-15 a year this way.

I think I would have any agreement down in writing so there would be no chance for a misunderstanding when it came time to pay up.

I've raised about 12 hogs over the past 2 years. It is no more trouble to feed and take care of 2 or even 5 than one. If it's just my best friend partnering with me, the deal we have is that he buys one of the piglets for me and we split the cost of feed. I've also raised as many as 5 at one time with three other partners. When we did this, the other fellows split the cost of pig #5 (my "free" pig) and then we split the cost of feed four ways. Everyone also contributed what household scraps they could to the pigs. This way, I got one "free" pig free and clear for my having to feed, etc. It has worked out very nicely.
