AGH piglets!!!

Aunt Jemimah, the sow that had gilt Hysteria last fall has finally farrowed again! Near as I can tell in the big pile of straw she has at least 6 dry, clean, and nursing piglets. It was raining so I didn't pull them out to check on them but will as soon as possible.

Last time she acted terrified of them. This time she's laying there gently grunting to them while they nurse. I knew she had babies or was dead when I tossed her ration of hay in and she didn't come out to greet me!!!

Congrats, Mike! I think it must be the weather. They wait for the coldest, wettest day they can find and then bam! babies! We had a litter born yesterday in the down pour.

Olivehill, was it the gilt you were trying to decide on wether she was bred or not? Either way congrats!

Actually, no. The one I was curious on is bred though (was able to palpate the pigs) and looks to be ready about any day now, too. Her vulva was a little swollen today but not too much. Maybe tonight or tomorrow. Hurry up and wait, right?

Update...there are sevin piglets! All romping around in their little shelter...aka pick up topper. Pulled two of them out and they were both little boys. Hope the rest are girls but I couldn't reach them and didn't want to tip over the topper and let the cold wind in on them.

Olivehill, I was glad you asked your questions. Someone responded to being able to palpate for piglets. I did that the next day and could feel the little buggars.

Unreal! Checked them out last night to see what I had. Of course I may have missed one as I was doing it all one handed holding the topper cover up with the other. But it looks like I have one gilt out of seven. Well if anybody needs a boar or barrow to raise let me know!

Kenworth, I'm north of Lansing about 45 minutes. South of Ithaca if that helps.
