I just butchered a two year old sow that was very small when I got her. Horrible hair, hooves, ricketed legs, blind, deaf, you name it. I found out they'd only fed her rice to keep her small.
*horrified look on face*
I fed her as she should be fed. She grew and had nice bone but never got over her extreme crabbiness (which ultimately led to her demise - she got very close to a major vein in my leg this last time).
Unfortunately, she had a nice, large litter earlier (11) but due to the blindness and deafness? She ultimately neglected them all. The last piglet alive was sucking on dirt. I then realized she HAD NO MILK. NONE. The rice diet messed her up top to bottom. Literally.
*shaking head* The horrible stuff we do to animals for the sake of dwarfing and the 'pet' trade. They are LIVESTOCK. The Asian Heirloom Hog is LIVESTOCK. I have or have had pet horses, cattle, goats, chickens, ducks, etc. But they are still LIVESTOCK. I'm charged with treating them humanely and properly as a livestock owner. And feeding them properly too.
She butchered out nicely and had 8 1/2# hams. Just right for me. 3" fat pad across the neck. Perfect for soap and grinding with deer. I was pleased at the outcome and NOT AT ALL IMPRESSED with the pet trade. She ended up weighing ~100# from a beginning weight of ~35# almost a year ago.
