I'm raising two hogs this year, one for us and one to sell. I have a buyer for the other but they want to butcher it themselves. What do I charge? My thought was to butcher mine, and use its hanging weight to determine the cost of their's . Do you think that works or should I just guestimate or just pull up a price that seems legitimate?

here is how i do it, lets say you wanna buy one from me. ok its 300 pds, i go to http://www.equitycoop.com/ check on stock prices, so if they were like 42 cents i charge 50cents a pound so 50x300=150.00 then if it did go to a butcher they pay the butchering charges, i sell alot . and everyone comes back for more.
My boss raises feeder pigs for other people and charges $1.25 a pound, but that all gets settled before she even buys the piglets. It must be dependent on where you live. Around here, pigs are much more expensive than what I read people on here buying and selling them at. We sold our weaner piglets at 25-35
lbs each for $100 a head. You would then need to put about $100 in feed per head into them to get to butcher weight. So at those prices, I wouldn't sell for less than $250 to $300. But people pay that here.
Do you have a way to accurately figure how much money you put into each hog? If so, do the math. That will tell you how much you have invested in dollars, then add to that something to cover your labor. I would think that somewhere in the range of $300 for a market weight hog would be fair.

I Caharged $1.00 a pound hanging for my 9 hogs this year. Already have 10 with deposits for next year. The pork you produce should me a superior product than what can be bought in the store. My customers end up paying like $2.36 a lb for there pork in the freezer. Still cheaper than store meat and 10 times better. One guy bought half a hog and has ordered 2 whole ones for next year. Don't short yourself. People keep pointing to "market" prices your not selling at the "market". I started with 3 feeder pigs and now up to 10 a year. going to do 20 next year,puts a little extra away for the wife and my sons christmas presents.
10 bushel corn and at least 1 bag of supplement will be needed to take a piglet to 225#
Cost of pig starter...usually 2 bags to weaning for 8 to 10 pigs
Cost of feed ..annual...and care for mom spread over 3 or 4 litters depending on your breeding program(we use average of 8 per litter) we feed sow cubes.
add costs of DE/garlic or other worming and general medicine costs
Add desired ROI.(return on investment)
Check with your supplier for costs and put your numbers together.
At $2.25 per lb. hanging weight...your profits are not great.
We recently priced 8 cuts of pork at WM and Kroger with an average price of $5.23 per lb.
ok so i raise more than 2 a year alot more . i have 5 sows and they have between 8 and 15 to a litter. i make 35.00 on feeders but where i live is hog country. and i am right in with everyone else. the commercial guys have all the gunk. and stuff in theres, mine do not and thats where i get my buissness. no steroids /no junk in them. i use ivomec 2% dry for the worming. i use corn and soybean meal. and they are fed grass and veggies all the time. so with my area, that i live i charge 50 cents a lb and i make money and my buyers are always there. and i have a few new ones because of word of mouth. but the truth really comes in when they get to the butcher, and believe me not all butchers are the same.
I think more time has to be spent on your input cost.... $150 should be a healthy enough profit.....

$150.00 i wish there was profit in that. I still cannot seem to find anything other than hog feed to feed my pigs. My starter is $18.50 a bag, my grower is $16.50 a bag and my finisher is $12.50 a bag. I have checked dairies for waste milk, grocery stores for unsaleable produce, local feed mills that sell straight to the customer(all sell to feed stores and the one that did burned down)I live in beer country(pacific nw), but no, no distilled grains for me! So heck no $150.00 would put me in the hole for a butcher hog!
I do know that alot of people around here charge anywhere from $2.00-$3.75lb.
i dont get it.? why are so many using bagged feeds? like i said before i use soybean meal/ corn and molasses are you buying corn by the bag? then i would assume thats where it does hurt you. the price of corn and some one else said 3 different types of i assume bags again. i grow my own corn/ a bag of soybean meal is like 13.00 a bag and molasses is like 9.00 it makes 600 pounds of feed, it lasts about 2 weeks.sometimes 3 depending on how many and how big. right now i have 3 ready to butcher 300 pounds and 11 baby's that are about 30 pounds it should last for a couple of weeks. but remember where i am .hog country. everyone has pigs out here.
Soybean meal here is $40 per 50lbs and corn is $15 per $50lbs. I am growing my own corn, though i don't have a mill and i am growing my own soybeans, though not sure if they are going to produce. molasses i have no idea how much it is or where to get it. I have searched everywhere for feed, but none. Even our crappy all stock is $8.50 a 50lb bag! Oregon sucks for this stuff i guess. If you have any suggestions PLEASE tell me! Ultimately i am doing this for fun, anything i make off those pigs goes straight back to them and then some, i hate the and then some part.
holy crapolla/ jimmeny christmas 40.00 a bag for soybean meal. no wonder your asking. do you have a feeds and feedings book? ok ill try my hand at this. i have the book open . soybean meal is only for the protein. and they definitely need that. linseed/fish meal/peanuts/beet pulp/these are all really good proteins also. that can be used instead of soybean meal. /barley/ do you have a feed store around? or a farm&fleet? and are you pasturing them? that would be a lot of help right there. for the protein also. also screenings are good for pigs . they are the hearts of corn. your all stock is good it has the molasses/oats/ in it. if its the same as at farm and fleet. you said no mill.. that hurts. i wouldn't know what to do without one. how far are you away from a big city? also go to hellolocal.com put in pig feed and your state. i don't know if this helps but i hope it has. i guess i never thought things aren't where i am and everything is different everywhere, wow what a awakening i just got.
Thanks shagerman.....i did the hellolocal.com and i may have a few leads, not sure. Oregon mainly exports it's grain, I live in the Portland Metro Area(1,000,000+ population), but it doesn't matter. All the feed stores are high. I will keep digging though!
