One Escaped Pig + One Pallet = Sleep

Well, he went and did it again last night at about 1:00 in the morning. Stuck that nose through the fence and wallowed out a hole big enough to escape through. And here I thought he had gotten too big for that game. DW heard him outside woofing like a mad dog. Opened the door and he was running around the yard like a maniac. LOL She woke me up to get him back in. I found his hole and filled up his feed bowl inside the pen and left a little feed trail from outside back inside his pen to his bowl. Once I encouraged him to get back in, I dropped a pallet over his "escape hole" and tied the pallet to the fence from the outside. I'll never raise a pig again without electric fence! But pallets sure are a handy thing to have around! Was back in bed asleep in no time.

I have electric fencing plus 4 foot tall woven field fence. I would never want just one or the other. I NEED both! I have never lost a pig to "Freedom" but I did with every thing else I tried.

For Hogs I used to dig A trench 12" deep[ and set A fence made from Pallets into it. Never Any escapes and only minor repairs to the wood. But I learned quick to use 2X4 welded wire on the insides of the pallets!!!!

We wished we could have done that when our larger pig got out. Problem was, the smaller pig would have got out too.
Tonya kept an eye on her while I went back to the house and grabbed the .22. She weighed about 160# and we had hoped to get her to 220# before slaughter. I have a neighbor that lives fairly close and I couldn't risk her rooting up the neighbor's nicely manicured lawn. A friend spent a day and a half trying to catch an escapee and it cost him about $2500 to have his neighbor's lawn repaired. Bullets are cheap and the meat tastes great.
