A good deal?

I've been lurking around here and reading all the info you all have to share about pigs. There's much to learn and it's all right here.
"Thanks" for sharing your knowledge.

We've been looking into getting a couple of feeder pigs. We looked at some Hamp/Spot crosses today. They are older than the average feeder pig (from what we've read) as they weigh about 100 lbs. The kid is asking $45.00 each. At the sale barn in Ship. they've been going for $30.00 for a 50 lb. feeder pig.

I guess I'm asking what you all think about this - a deal or not? Any reason not to buy bigger?

Thanks for helping us that are new to the world of pigs.

It sounds good to me, especially for a 100lb pig.
It will not take so long to feed out to butchering weight.

BTW, welcome to the pig forum.

Sounds like a great deal to me.

I sell weaners for 75$ each starting in April for the 4H crowd.

I'd jump on it. I sold a similar sized feeder pig yesterday for $80. You'll just be eating tasty pork chops and bacon quicker!

Forgetting about the exchange rate, your actually paying similar prices for weaner pigs as we do in which case I would grab those pigs and run. In fact I would grab everything he had at that price - and if he's only a kid and has done the hard graft himself to get them to that size, I would throw in a few extra dollars too.

Cheers,
Ronnie

I thank you all for your opinions. We felt it was a good deal, but being our first time buying feeder pigs, we just wanted the opinions of those with experience.
There are 9 for sale. I think there were 7 gilts and 2 barrows. Money is a bit tight right now or we would get more. We'd love to have a full pen.

Thanks again and thanks for the welcome to the "Pig" forum.

I bought two about that size from a friend at work for $50 apiece but they delivered them from about 45 miles away (I don't have a truck or trailer) so I threw in another $25. I'd go for it.
