They are also called does by people that have less than quality livestock, poor quality livestock, people who want you to think their poor quality livestock is quality livestock. Maybe even people who are fooling themselves for all I know.
Good luck with your new venture, it is a lot of hard work, a lot of observation(my favorite) and always a surprise just around the corner.

I think it's a matter of class or age as to wether you have does or nannies. I had goats for almost 20 years before I ever heard them refered to as buck and does. Alot of people still don't know they are does and not nannies. I have a bulletin board at the feed store where I work and have had more than a few people comment on some expensive rabbits when seeing an add for a buck or doe. Alot of commercial goat raisers don't breed for the show ring but they may have a 'nanny' out in their pasture that could beat a 'doe' if taken in the show ring. Just remember old habbits die hard for some people and don't be so judgemental if they refer to their goats as nannies and billies.

I always call our fairly old does nannies, when they make me mad I call them stupid nannies, it really is just a thing. I know that they are called bucks and does, I do not call ANY of the bucks billies though, just the old does with udders that hang WAY past their knees, lol.

If you think the term "bucks and does" are so sophisticated and correct, do a google search with those words, I did and every time about the forth or fifth web site is for rats or ship rats. Personally I have been aware of the term "bucks and does" since I was about nine when I started raising rabbits, that was fifty years ago. I just killed a very, very large bull snake that I found eating guinea eggs of a nest I have been watching. Its always something when you have livestock.

I think that's our point is that it's the breeders choice to call them billies/nannies or bucks/does. I just think it's unfair to equate someone who calls a goat nanny as someone who doesn't have quality stock as it sounded in your first post, and misleading to a possible new goat owner if they asume because someone called their goats does that they were getting quality stock. Personally I like the term billies/nannies because they are unique to goats. You can refer to a nanny at a goat show. The people there may look down on you but they still know you are refering to a female goat. On the other hand talk about a doe to a non goat person and they don't know if your refering to a rabbit, deer or what. I also don't believe if someone has a bad image of goats that what you call them is going to change their mind.

forget it, you won't understand. i'm deleting my previous posts. i don't have expensive goats, i have good goats, and tried to be helpful. good luck in your search for nannies. i wasn't trying to start anything, merely be helpful and informative, guess that's not a welcome thing here anymore, unless one or two special people are giving the advice.

Purchasing goats
Go to yahoo groups and search for groups that cover the breed you are looking for. Post this same question on the group list. Make sure you state the area you are in. You will receive many responses from people with goats to sell. If you are interested in VA Saanens PM me!

Not everyone calls goats the same thing
.
I go to three different states to buy goats, and they all call the boys billies and the girls they call nannys.
Now when it comes to deers ( all of the same three states included ) they all call the boys bucks, and the girls are refered to as does.
It all depends where you come from in which state.

does and bucks
Our Alpines are indeed bucks and does. They deserve my respect for all they give me. You are probably right that lots of people refer to them otherwise but guess they don't know the proper terms. You shouldn't take other people's advice as being rude and demeaning. They were just trying to educate you as to the proper terms. That's why we ask questions here; to learn.

I guess I'd have to agree with Okgoatgal2 and Mygoat;.......why would anyone even bother to ask or post a question here??? All it seems to do is start a "class" war on either terminology being "correct" or the general attitude of "my goats are BETTER than YOUR goats.......because YOU KNOW the "proper name" to call them.......sheesh people......get a life .......
All I know is that when I call MY GOATS home for dinner..... is that they try and be the first one back at the manger to eat!!! They don't seem to care what else I call them.
And in answer to RustyShacklefor......wish that we lived closer.....have a nice number of young "nannies" or does or young female goats......which are younger than a year and never been with a "billie/billy" or buck or male goat.
Until NEXT time.....

Unfortuantely, I do *not* have any does for sale.
My goats come running when I holler "CABRAS!" Actually, mostly they are responding to me hollering more than anything. But they are more apt to pay attention when I yell for them in Spanish. I am a cabrera (goat herder) after all.
On our farm the males are referred to as "bubbas" just because that is what I call them. They each have names and will respond to their names but as a general rule, be they bucks, bulls, or tom cats, I call them bubbas.
In this area a doe and buck first and foremost is a deer. Second on the list they are goats and at the end is the rabbits.
They are generally referred to as billies and nannies here because that is how they are going to sell in our area. Registered stock generally sells online and through the groups like ADGA, ABGA, ISBGA, etc.and those people are going to be calling them bucks and does and you will get looked at twice for refering to them as bucks and does. But at the feed mills and in the papers around here they are usually called billies and nannies. I call them bucks but I make it a point to include photos as well so people know what I am referring to. Then again, I am very particular when it comes to how people refer to bovine so I understand where y'all are coming from.
I think the issue was more with the way the message came off sounding. Words can be quickly misunderstood on places like this and that is where these wonderful smilies can come in handy.

Actually, I thoutht the original reason for the offensiveness of the nanny/billy terms had nothing to do with quality animals. Male slaves were called "Billies" and female slaves were called "Nannies"......it was my understanding that the terms were avoided by those not wanting to be associated with these derogatory terms.
Of course my husband calls our buck "nutsack"......so much for not being offensive.
