Unhappy What is this stuff?

one of my goats has sort of scabby stuff in her rear pasterns, and the same in between her rear toes. i have been putting iodine on it, and just started vet-wrapping it (to keep dirt out and iodine in). anybody else have that problem/ how do you fix it/ what causes it?

Could possibly be mites or hoof scald. Dr. Naylors Hoof and Heal work extremely well. Goats seem to be subject to this in wetter climates.

first of all, do NOT wrap iodine, it will cause blistering. second, are they scratches or like hot spots. are they itchy? are they sore or also have bruises?

scabby stuff

Many folk have had good luck with applying mastitis treatment medicine topically on the affected area. The oil in it makes it stick pretty well, and it contains an antibiotc. I always suspect low copper when there are skin problems showing up since copper is soooo important in immune function and copper deficiency is very common in goats.

if it is rain rot - caused by a microbe that likes moisture and lack of oxygen.

this picture taken after 5 days of treatment

go to this link to see what I did-he had extensive rain rot over all his legs and back.

I did not use triple antibiotic ointment or wrap the legs as one person suggested and the lack of oxygen is one of the things this mcrobe needs.

I've had better luck with Novalsan than betadine, it is not as drying to the skin. You can dilute it to a "sky blue" color and use it. Also, you can wrap it loosely if needed.

Ken.
it hasn't rained here since last winter, so the place is very dry.
as to low copper, we have a salt lick out there that has copper in it.
i just noticed that she has the problem in between her front hooves too. so i think it is spreading, but it is only in the places i mentioned.
