i hate it when i dont think ahead...

Daisy's babies still havent eaten any solid food at 3 weeks, so i set out to milk daisy a little bit to pour over some of the goat food. after finnaly getting some milk, i decided her udder needed some bag balm, it was rough and scabby feeling. i rubbed it in and then realized, i dont know if baby goats can nurse while this stuff is on! hmm. i knew it would be hard to get it all off, so i just separated her babies from her for over night tonight. i did mix milk and molasses in with some feed for the babies and put it in with them. mommy can still see her babies thru the shed, so they are staying quiet. is bag balm bad for baby goats?

Howdy ya'll......My kidds have never started eating solids later then a week old...and drinking water the first day of life.....is this not normal?...hay is nibbled on about 3 days old not that they eat it at this age but they try...only had problems with one kidd not drinking water till she was about 4 weeks old.....now I know all my goats are special lol....but is it strange to have them drinking and eating at such and early age? never did them no harm...dale anne

Mine are also nibbling at hay pretty quick, but are a few weeks old before they start nibbling at grain with their dams. Bottle kids usually take a little longer to nibble at grain, like a couple of months. I haven't worried too much about whether they are drinking the water while they are on bottles, so I just haven't really noticed when they start

I figure if they are with their dam it isn't hurting nothing to let them figure it out for themselve, unless the dam refuses to let the babies nurse, but in that case you would need to bottle feed. Your babies are gonna bejust fine, don't worry they grow up soon enough anyway.
