Question Vaccinations for Goats?

I need to know if goats need to have vaccinations annually, and if so everything possible about it but I could work with a name. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Goats need an annual CD/T vaccine. It's to prevent the clostridium diseases ("overeating disease") and tetanus. The dosage will be written on the bottle itself. It's given under the skin.

Yes, it is the CD&T vaccine and it is 2ml or 2cc per goat, no matter size or age.

Howdy goatfreak...yes thats the name of the shot you can buy it at caprinesupply.com or yer vet office....cost about 4-5 bucks not including the needle and syring which you can also buy at the website.....I dont think it's legal to buy epinphrine any more on line but can ask yer vet to buy some from...keep this on hand in case yer goats have an allergic reaction to the shot.....they will also need 2cc-5 cc depending on size of positive bacteria right after the shot is given as it will upset the ruman[belly].....good luck dale anne

Thank you so much everybody! Do you know if it has to be in a shot though, I have a 300 pound buck and the guy we bought him from said he does fine with stuff given orally, but did not mention what he does when it's time for shots. He's a big boy and he's already stepped on my toes before, and I'm not looking to do that again. He's a good natured buck, but he does not seem to know his own strength, or his weight.

As far as I know CD&T has to be injected....perhaps he was referring to oral wormers?
Perhaps you could give him some treats to occupy his attention whil you give him the injection..or have someone help hold him still. It needs to go under the skin and not into the muscle tissue itself.

Just another note on the CD/T. Some goats develop lumps and/or abcsesses from the injection. Be sure to use a new sterile needle. Many give the shot behind the front leg, but my last goat I gave it at the top of the shoulder & apparently the movement of her walking prevented a lump from forming.

I have always given the CDT shot right over the ribs. I just pull the skin up to make a tent and push the needle in and give them the shot.

It really is easy..but with your big fella I would get somebody to hold his head or something when you do that. Most of mine just stand there when I gives shots.

Yeah I agree with the head holding thing. We just got through trimming his hooves and it was just me and my brother since I'm sure you don't know but I'm 14 and my brothers 10 so it was pretty hard, and his horns bend out like the handlebars of a bike so that would hurt a lot. Well thanks a whole bunch guys.

All my goats take shots ok, except my queen doe. She gets really upset at the sight of the needle. It takes two of us, what I do is take her in the barn and put her against a flat wall, head into the corner and lean into her. Then I give her the shot and she doesn't have anywhere to go. Any flat wall will do, just have someone lean into one end and the one giving the shot lean into the area the shot is going and don't be afraid to put your weight into it, if your goat is that big, your not gonna hurt him. Give him something to occupy his mind like a treat at the same time.

I give Bar-Vac CD&T shots.
Does get them 30 days before kidding,
Kids get them when dissbudded or casterated (or 2 weeks if you aren't doing either), then 21 days after the first dose than again at 6 moths old. From there yearly.
Bucks, wethers, and dry yearlings once a year.

I also started last year in giving Co-Rid for Cociddia (sp).
The dose for this is you mix the Co-Rid Powder I think 1 Table Spoon to 3 ozs of water and the goats get 1cc per 10 lbs of body wieght for 5 days. Adults get this once a year and kids get it for 5 mos than yearly.

Also in the area I live in theres a worm thats bad. I'm not sure of the scientific name but it's called "deer worm" here. (It gets in to the goat's spine and works it's way up to the brain). I give Ivermectin Pour-On For Cattle in Oct. for this. Pour-On is the only wormer that I know of gets rid of this type of worm and recently a friend who's new to goats her wether I belive had this but luckily she called me and I got to her the next day and gave the goat a major overdose of the wormer and the goat is acting find now (what the deer worm do is cause parlization in the back legs and cause the goats to drag them. Thats what happen to this wether, he favored his on back leg).

Thats the only ones I give on a "set" schedual. Regular wormer is given when needed.

This would be a menengial worm... very nasty and almost always fatal to the animal because there seem to be few symptoms until it's too late.It can affect most of your livestock as well from my understanding.

How does everyone feel about vaccinating for sore mouth with Ovine Ecthyma? We went to county fair last year with our goats and some of the sheep were sent home because they had sore mouth, we didn't get it but we don't want to either! I found the Colorado Serum site and they make a sore mouth vaccine for goats. Does anyone use this, have good or bad expirience with it? Thanks
