I had plans for tonite and what does my goat do? she decides to not eat her food. she is pregnant, so i had to call off the whole trip just so i can watch her and try to feed her often. humph. lol i knew she would do something to make me mad...... i gave her a bath today with the hose, and she was quite angry.

I'll take a stab at it

Taking the waterhose to your goat, especially when you are talking cold well water, is the worst thing you can do to your goat during the heat of summer. It soaks them to the bone, plumments thier body temp, and upsets their rumen. She didn't eat her grain because her rumen is upset. Vicki

If you have probios paste give her a good dose of that. I give about three inches. I do not know how many notches that is on the wheel. My goats love the stuff. They think it is candy. It is very expensive candy .

can it upset the rumen? she was just fine as i was washin her.... she proceded to eat the lower leaves off of the crabapple tree she was near.... and later when she wouldnt eat, she ate some apple leaves i retrieved for her. but she wouldnt eat her grain or hay. i have given them bathes before without there ever being a problem. hehe my other doe would eat anything she could even if she was dying, so she's not a problem, lol.

I wouldn't dream of hosing down one of my goats, which is why I thought maybe you were just pulling our chains. Heck, my goats run to the barn when they hear thunder. I always assumed this was a natural instinct to avoid getting wet as they get sick so easily when they do.
It seemed obvious to me that the hosing down made the goat sick, and odd that you would blame the goat. No offense, since obviously this has not been your experience.

Smile

Lets don't scold. She obviously didn't know better or she would not have done it.

Just give her something to straighten out her ruman and write this down in your book of what not to do again.

My poor critters have had to go through a lot while I learned the hard way.
I am sure I will make more mistakes in the future. I sure am learning a lot though!

Oh yes, I have also hosed them down on a really hot day too. (sorry)

hosing them will not make them sick unless you hose them when it is cold. people who show goats shave them then wash them. mom washes hers a couple times every summer-never had one get sick from it in 20 years now. the goat didn't feel like eating and since she's preg, the owner is nervous. i'm guessing pretty new to goats. she probly ate too many crap apple leaves and didn't want to eat the grain for whatever reason. do you have baking soda available to her? if not, put some out. the probios is a good idea, too.
it is the draft or a weak immune system that causes goats to get sick after getting wet. i have a friend who bought my herd when i had to sell out a couple of yrs ago. she raises hogs. she has a pond that the hogs lay around in on hot days. these goats, who would leap like gazelles to avoid mud learned to go into the pond up the their bellies on hot days and they never did get ill from it. they actually like the water now-and these are nubians and lamanchas.

well, i have done it many times before. i wasnt really blaming the goat but was really laughin about it. its a huge joke between me and my friends that everytime i do something to her (like give her wormer drench or a shot) she does something baq, and this was one of those things. she ate today, but not as well as usual. she just kinda sits around. shes been doin that lately. im watchen her fairly close, but ive never heard of a hose off givin them an upset tummy. maybe her bein pregnant made her more suseptible (sp) to the upset? idk but doesnt anyone else bathe thier goat? is there other better ways to do it? she had a bunch of molasses all over her and dirt everywhere that seemed to be bothering her, like they were itchy or annoying.

My goats got baths earlier this spring when the lice situation got out of hand (really strange weather). That's a really rare thing, though. Usually the worst of the dirt comes off when I brush them - they love being brushed.

I personally don't like being sprayed with a hose, no matter how hot it gets. When I bath my goats, I fill up a 40 gal tub and let it sit for an hour or two to warm up a little, then give the baths. Its not hot, but it isn't freezing cold either. Bathed everyone but the doe yesterday. Her, I did hose off and she really seemed to enjoy it. Temps here were at 106 and she kept coming around while I was washing the car. When I finished, everyone got a bath.
