tail wound

I've got a doe that has an open wound on the top of her tail where it meets her butt. It's raw meat, looks blistered, the hair is gone...it looks like a burn but there's nothing she could've gotten burned on. It's not on the tip of the tail like a mineral deficiency. I sprayed some WoundKote on it and it looks like she's already licked it off (or maybe the LGD licked it off).

She has no hair loss anywhere else, seems fine, normal otherwise. I haven't taken her temperature.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It's tough trying to keep anything on a goat with a licking dog or on a place on her body she can lick herself. I prefer Furol to everything sprayable, and use it on everything. Stay away from SWAT it will pull off her hair and make the sore worse. Right now if you can't keep her from licking it or the dog away, there isn't anything you can do. Try cleaning it each day with something milk, no peroxide, and see if it will heal on it's own. Comfrey is great for things like this, it also has a bitter taste so my goats don't lick it off usually. Vicki

You might also check for lice, I've seen that type of very isolated hair loss and rubbing from itching. s.

Thank you. I'm so relieved it isn't some dreaded skin disease.

Vicki, you're right about the licking it right off. I tried Furall and she licks that too. I'm gonna give her a little sevin dust splash in the morning just in case she has lice. It hasn't gotten any worse but it sure is ugly looking. I may try some Wonder Dust hoping it isn't as tasty as the Furall.

Thanks again.

Hi Shelby (missed you at the club show with your beautiful saanens!) and Debi, do you both get lice? We have seen lice on brokered goats coming in for export, but have never seen lice in and around our area. We were talking about it at the show this early spring, and the consensus was that lice must simply not live on goats out here. I do know they live on our children! We battled lice all the time when the kids started school out here when they were young. I finally had enough and made the school adopt the normal, check heads policy that they did in Houston. Now that cleared it up! Vicki

I always have a hard time keeping bandages on my horses, so I have started using gauze and duct tape. I medicate and bandage and then do a heck of a tape job with duct tape. That makes it hard for them to get to and if they do manage to get it off, it takes them a while and you will probably have checked on them by then.
