CL in chickens??

Hello to all. Wondering if you could answer a question for me. Has anyone ever heard of CL being transfered to poultry, specifically chickens? I know it can transfer to horses, other goats and humans but can't find anything about transfering to chickens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can help you in your finding of information about it, but don't have time to hunt it down.

Look up in a good chicken vet text or google, if chickens get the bacteria cornybacterium pseudotuberculosis....or.... C. Ovis...if they do than yes it is the same bacteria that causes the CL abscess in goats and sheep. Vicki

If you have a chicken with an weeping, nasty wound, it's possibly lymphoid leukosis aka mareks. Nasty. There's a vaccine, if you can get it, for chicks. If this is a pet bird, your vet can do a titer to check for the disease -- if it's livestock (not a pet) kill the bird if there's any suspicion of marek. Even if the bird survives, they're likely to continue to spread the bug.

Thanks for helping. We had a goat with CL isolated, but the only place we had was beside the chicken coop. None of the chickens are sick or have any problems, just didn't want to eat the eggs if they could possibly be infected. And the goat was NOT in the same area as the chickens, just beside.

That is a very good point, when you have an animal isolated, do not let the cats or hens spread the disease by walking in and out of the quaranteen pen. With CL all the exude from the abscess is contaminated, if it goes on the ground and then is picked up by the foot of your hen scratching or cat or you, it can be spread to the other animals by walking this around.

The problem with the above post, is that just because the Cornybacterium causes abscess in goats, it can cause something totally unrealted in chickens or dogs, why you have to look up the bacteria and see if it is ever found in disease of chickens or the other animals you have. Horses are a very good example of this with CL.

The Johnnes bacteria in cattle reacts very differently in goats. Same with OPP in sheep and CAE in goats, same thing, just very different manifistations. Vicki
