What's up with this umbilical cord site??

This guy was born May 26. He is an only child, and his cord was dipped in Iodine the same as every other kid that we've had. This is the first time this has happened. He acts completely normal, he doesn't even act like this bothers him. I guess I'm wondering what I need to do about it, can I fix it? What is it and what caused it? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have no idea what it is.

As to what to do about it I have a couple ideas. Those with more experience are free to correct me.

I would either cut and cauterize (sp) or elasterator band it. Or dip in iodine periodically and see if that dries it up.

Not a vet and not much experience with this sort of thing, but it looks like a hernia. As much as I distrust vets with my goats, I wouldn't do anything but keep it clean until I've had a professional look at it. If it is a hernia, that could be part of his insides poking out. Yikes!

More experienced goat slaves chime in, please. I'm curious, too.

I would not band anything here. Not a vet but looks like a hernia, so if banded the intestines could be banded which would cause death. If it is a hernia would have to be fixed surgically. Hernias can be inheritable so here he would not be a candidate for breeding stock. Due to that, cost of repair, and goats don't do well with surgery he would be raised, if possible, to fall and sent to freezer camp.

It appears to be an umbilical hernia, and banding would likely kill the goat.
It will take minor surgery to repair, and will cost more than most goats are worth.

Unless he's really special, I'd invite him to a BBQ

Yes, it does look more like a hernia; and the only thing I would do is keep it sterile until he is large enough to be slaughtered.

Well, not what I hoped for, but excellent info. Good to know, I will take him off of thesale market and reservd him a spot with the butcher. We always take 2 every year..too bad cuz he is absolutely gorgeous! He is only 1 month oldand has already outgrown the 3 month old buckling I have left!!

The surgery would entail pushing the intestines back in and then stitching up the tear in the abdominal wall, and would most likely cost more than he's worth unless you could sell him as a registered breeder.

If that's possible, you could get a rough estimate from a Vet on the costs
