Don't know if this will help, I got it off of a yahoo goat group:
"Terry Hutchens, the University of Kentucky Goat Specialist, gave a talk at a local goat association meeting this week and spent some time on parasites ... he said a couple of things that I found very interesting and thought I should pass along:
- MOST dewormers (not all) are fairly safe and can be used (if needed) at 5-7 times recommended dosage
- ALL dewormers should be given orally since it is more effective (I specifically asked about subcutaneous injections and he recommended against them and indicated his reason was that it took much longer for the effective ingredient to reach the parasite over a longer period of time and therefore was not as effective as oral)
- Cydectin was the most effective wormer but, therefore, should not be used on a regular basis but reserved for the most difficult cases to avoid resistance ... if Cydectin won't work, you will probably be in trouble
- you can increase the effectiveness of any dewormer by slowing down the digestive system of a goat to allow more time for the effective medicine to be in contact with the parasites ... he recommended that one way to do this was to enforce a fast for 24 hours before deworming and then for 8 hours afterwards (make water available though)"
Being new to goats also I thought this was very helpful for the future.
