Real Poop Talk

My 4-5 week old buckling was pooping what looked like cat poop Sunday and Monday. Yesterday and today he's been having the runs. No mucous or blood or anything like that. I went and got him probios and gave it to him today.

I just went out to give the older doe a treat and she backed up, almost fell down the stairs, and ended up doing a weird dance and corrected herself. She literally scared the poop out of herself in the process. Her poops starting to look clumpy like his did.

So now I'm wondering if she's going to come down with scours, and if I should give her probios now just to be safe? I recently switched their feed but mixed the feed they were previously eating to help them adjust. This was when his poop was clumpy and cat poopish though so I don't feel like it was caused from changing feed.

I would get a fecal done asap!
Was she wormed after kidding? If she was it might not have worked, why I suggest fecal.
Kid is prime age for cocci. Is he on prevention yet?

I second the cocci. That's what mine looked like when he had it.

She hasn't kidded but was wormed with Cydectin last week. I'm not sure how old she is, but the guy I got her from said 3-4 months. For a Pygmy she looks like an adult.

As for cocci prevention, thats one of the reasons I switched to the medicated feed. I gave him the probios and if that doesn't help, I was just gonna give him corid.

He is the right age for cocci and its the right time of year. Cocci meds in feed will not be enough. He simply cannot eat enough of it to be effective. Need to dose him with a cocci treatment to kill the load he has now. Even if the runs clear up on their own for a while, chances are good they will come back and worse. Corid, Dimethox, both work for cocci treatment.

I called up at the feed store to see if they had corid or Dimethox today and they recommended trying probiotics first to be sure it's not something else. I was worried it was cocci. I will just go ahead and dose him then. Do I need to do her as well or should I wait and see if she develops symptoms?

Probiotics would be good to give him as he is getting his cocci treatment. As young as she is, it would be a good idea to treat them together. She is still a very susceptible age for cocci, and if they are living together, she has it too. Treat them both, then she won't be able to re-infect him. Good idea to keep them on a cocci prevention program after you get finished treating them. That is what I'd do if they were mine. Hope this helps!

Is this dosing info correct?

Mixing undiluted Corid liquid:
Mix 6 tablespoons(3 ounces) corid to 16 oz water.... not sure about the powdered mixture...
then dose it at ...
30cc per 100lbs
15cc per 50lbs
7.5 per 25 lbs
treat individually for 5 days

Here are correct dosing methods:

http://www.dairygoatinfo.com/f28/coc...s-doses-21499/

medicated feed can help in kid management when creep fed, but it is only really effective in older kids because the young ones cannot eat enough to be effective. Here we do medicated feed creep fed, but continue direct dosing a prevention until they are 3-4 mon old. Around 3-4mon we go to a large ration of medicated feed (full size goats, 1-1.5lbs/kid/day).

Fecals from http://www.midamericaagresearch.net/ will help you make sure what you're doing is working. 5.00 each, can't beat it!

Is this saying not to dilute? I just want to be sure before giving them an incorrect dose.

Yes, that site(which I have found to be very reliable on meds, feeding, etc)says not to dilute Corid for goats. It is too weak when diluted.

I gave them the Corid for 5 days, along with probios. Otis' butt dried up and he was pooping normal for about 5-6 days? Now one of them is having those clumpy long poops again! I'm not sure who it's coming from. My guess is Otis.

Should I start the Corid and probios again or what? I thought I got the medicated feed but I was looking at it last night and I think I grabbed the wrong bag. *forehead smack*

Also, this bottle baby we just got. Should I be putting corid in his bottle for prevention? And how much would be ok? He's only 5 weeks.
