Lice Treatment

I noticed the goats were scratching themselves more than usual so I brushed them down and they have lice for sure. I've read Diatomaceous Earth is good for treatment but I was wondering what yall do?

CYLENCE works great for goat lice. I ordered mine from Jeffers but I know some feed stores carry it also. I can't remember if I've seen it at TSC or not.

I got DE for now, I'll see if it works. The feed store by my house isn't very good. They don't even have CDT or goat mineral. They have everything for horses though haha.

TSC had DE and had permethrin that they were trying to sell me on

I've used DE for lice on goats and it worked pretty well but required repeated applications. What totally got rid of them for me was copper bollusing them. I've noticed that only my animals that are a little deficient in one or more minerals really have a problem with them. I saw the same with sheep who needed minerals they weren't getting. Your goats may or may not need copper so I wouldn't Just do it for lice, but if they have other symptoms of being deficient it might be just what they need.

Horse lice dust can work. I use a liquid permethrin product. Safe for kids and pregnant does. Because of the lice lifecycle, it's a good idea to repeat dose in about 10 days to get the ones that were newly hatched. The stuff does not kill eggs, just the hatched lice.

That's what the guy at TSC was suggesting I get.

I use DE on my gals. A once-weekly thorough dust/work-thru the fur does the trick.

Agree with the copper and other supplements. As long as the herd is properly nourished, parasites are more of an annoyance than a life-threatening issue.
