dehorning kids

Well, we just did our first dehorning. Ug..we feel like horrible monsters. Is there anything next time that we can give the kid for the pain?

Oh and the smell.

Nothing for the pain here. It only takes so little time & they are usually bouncing around again & nursing in a matter of minutes.
It's tough on the humans the 1st few times though.

I shave the heads before burning, that helps with a lot of the smell.
Nothing for pain here either. A friend of mine actually burnt his hand with a disbudder once. Said after the initial second or 2 he didn't feel a thing as it had burnt the nerves. They scream just as much from the restraint as anything.

They scream when you trim the hair too. After all, getting a hair cut is so painful!

I cover their eyes and spritz each burn with solarcaine. Seems to really dry them up nicely.

You can nerve block with lidocaine and that works pretty good when done right. Problem is you have to learn how from a vet, and many of the ole timers don't believe it's necessary, though it's cheap and easy, so I really don't know why not.

I'd do it if I could convince a vet to sell some to me. :P When done fast and well, they should be back to normal within minutes. I usually ice down the spot a bit after, while waiting for the iron to heat up between burns. I also tattoo kids when I disbud, and they HATE that way worse IMO. That stays sore for days.

I've done nerve blocks and the lidocaine hurts just as much as the disbud. Lidocaine stings!

Yes, the tattooing is worse than the disbudding for sure! I also do both at once. Do all the mean nasty horrible things one time and then try to be nice to the kids for awhile and make em not hate me as much.

Nah, they'll love you again. It might take a day or two though.

Mine don't take a day or two with disbudding. I feed them right after and it's like nothing happened. They love the tops of their heads itched. The tattooed ears are really sore though, if you bump those they jerk away. :/

If they're bottle kids, give them a bottle afterwards (even if it's just a small amount). They nurse their dams for comfort, so nursing a bottle will comfort them.

Definitely shave the heads...much less stinky that way!
