Bloat - how long before you know

Our goats found their way into our layer feed sometime between 5:00 and 6:00 this evening. They typically get noble goat feed so grain is not entirely foreign to them, but not layer feed and no idea how much they ate. They have grass/alfalfa hay, fresh water and baking soda available.

How long would it take for signs of bloat to appear? We have a baby monitor in the barn and no sounds of distress so far.

You may get lucky with already having baking soda out they might not bloat, but I am willing to bet you might see some scouring, or at least some really loose stools.

I'd keep a close eye on them, and have the CD Antitoxin on hand. I hope you won't have to use it!

Thanks -- Am I safe to assume that 12+ hours later and no signs, we're in the clear? or does it take 24 or more hours before you know you've dodged the bullet?

I've heard 12 hours, no symptoms, and you're out of the dark. I don't know how true it is though.

The typical patter of my bloaty gal is "sneak food in the evening" and bloat by morning. In her case case, I would say she is safely out of the woods 24 hours after.
